Hand-held sharpeners often provide a better control and limit colored pencil lead breakage. I may use electric sharpeners for initial sharpening, but always use hand-held ones afterwards. Sometimes to only give the tip a bit more edge (so not a full sharpen). I really was excited to see a three-hole sharpener that could provide varying degrees of shape to my pencils...unfortunately, one type was a disaster. Even after trying it with three different pencils, I finally told myself that I would never use that "hole" sharpener again. The other two were what I would expect; however, the smaller shape sharpen size was not easy to utilize and get the shape I really wanted. Thus I just used the longer, more typical shape sharpener hole and it worked extremely well. One out of three worked to my satisfaction. The "bullet-shape" style was sturdy in my hand, but I often developed hand fatigue after using it for 3-6 pencils at a time. Maybe I am a perfectionist when it comes to sharpening my high end colored and graphite pencils, but I guess I will stick to less expensive sharpeners that do the job just as well.

My recommendation - test out many types of hand-held pencil sharpeners. Some may work well for you, while not for others. I had to try four different ones this past month as my old favorite was not available from my online art store. I gave Amazon a shot due to the variety available. I ultimately did find one that met my needs. Unfortunately this one did not...so I gave it to my sister who only dabbles with artistic pencils for fun, unlike me who wants to really get detail and drama from my pencil work.

PS: The weight and quality of the product is high, just did not like how two of the holes sharpened my pencils. Who knows, maybe going back to sharpening with a regular knife might be the way I ultimately go later in life! I am quite picky!
