I used this kit to rebuild the power steering pump in my 1998 Subaru Legacy. My pump had started to seep fluid from the front seal. If you've looked, you will have seen that remanufactured PS pumps run well over $120 for this car, and since I'm pretty handy with tools, a rebuild seemed like just the ticket to save myself some serious money.

I found that this kit contained almost everything you need to rebuild the pump. There are three additional parts that you will need to do a proper rebuild:
- A new bearing, available from Amazon 6203RS Bearing 17x40x12 Sealed Ball Bearings, or from any auto parts store as P/N 6203RS. Power steering fluid has a high detergent content, and if your front seal is seeping like mine was, I can pretty much guarantee that your bearing will be shot because the PS fluid will have washed all the grease out of the bearing.
- The O-ring that goes between the pump itself and the tank, Subaru P/N 34427AA060
- The sealing washer that goes between the pump and the tank, Subaru P/N 34443AA010

Obviously you will also need new fluid to replace what you lose when you remove the pump. Use whatever your car owner's manual specifies. I used about 1.5 quarts since I flushed the system while I had it apart (poor man's flush: put the return line into a bucket instead of hooking it up to the tank, put fresh fluid into the tank, and turn the pump by hand until clean fluid comes out of the return line).

When I initially did the rebuild, I did not change the two tank seals, and they leaked when I put everything back together.

Worked out great! My power steering pump on my 1998 Subaru legacy was leaking badly. It would often give off a burning smell randomly when going up hills or under heavy acceleration, due to the fluid leaking down onto the header and burning off. so I decided to try and re-seal it myself instead of buying a brand new one. The job was relatively easy, and saved me $100+ . And now my car doesn't smell like its on fire anymore. Winning!

Fit was spot on. Pump no longer leaking over the top of the block. Beware the getting the pulley off to relace the front seal
is not without some special tools or experience. I lacked one or the other or both and just replaced the orings and all was well. Also, I went to the dealer for two more seals that keep the resevoir from leaking. Don't do this rebuild without those.

This kit was used to rebuild a 1996 Subaru Impreza pump. The kit failed after 200 Miles suggesting seal failure. After speaking to a steering technician I have decided to replace the pump through Amazon with a Cardone rebuilt. I will report further after replacement but it appears rebuilding hardly ever works and it is best to replace. That said Subaru do sell a rebuild kit and I wonder whether the quality of their kit is better
