I would have given 5 stars on this item, but the few issues I encountered were totally unacceptable. From start to finish I spent about 6 hours behind this item.

I had issues with the locking system opening intermittently. In other words, it worked in the beginning and then it just stopped working and I couldn't unlock/lock the safe. I spent the first two hours figuring-out why and how to fix the problem. To do that, I had to open the locking panel behind the safe door and see what was actually happening. It turned-out that the locking mechanism was interfering with the plunger. I had to loosen 4 screws holding the plunger and orient it away from the mechanism to make it open/close freely. Also, the override key wouldn't open/close the lock after few tries; so much for the override key. The cause of this was that the inside nut holding the lock was loose. Luckily, I was able to correct these two issues by opening the locking panel before I put it on the wall. Otherwise, I would have to cut the steel to open it. But these issues are unacceptable in a new factory product. Was someone sleeping on the job!

The next two hours I spent figuring-out how the telescoping worked to give the adjustable inside depth. The directions were somewhat clear, but doing it practically was difficult in order to set it for my situation. Since I only needed a maximum of 4" depth, I combined all sections using one screw on each side and that held everything in place. Only the back section was adjustable and I didn't care about the middle section being adjustable as I only needed 4".

The next two hours were sort of the easiest. It was simply measuring and cutting the sheet rock and then pre-drilling the holes on the two side studs.Read more ›

I bought this safe because of its adjustable mounting depth. I installed it in the back of a closet and added a frame of two-inch thick trim between it and the wall to gain extra depth. There really isn't much to installing the safe assuming your wall studs are installed on standard 16-inch centers. Oh, and you should have some basic construction skills, like measuring, squaring, cutting sheetrock, and installing small bolts, nuts and washers. Installation took me about 45 minutes, including building the frame that I used to increase depth.

The depth of the safe interior is expandable as advertised, but I was a bit disappointed in its implementation. The bolts for the expandable sections stick out into the safe itself, and they leave open adjustment slots that look sloppy. The bottom of the safe has a large circular cutout meant to clear the hinge when installed in its most shallow configuration, but when expanded, this hole leaves a place for small items (say a ring!) to drop into the open wall cavity. A piece of tape works to cover the hole, but this also looks sloppy. The shelves are expandable, but again, they come with exposed bolts and slots that look sloppy. Also, neither of the two included shelf extensions was the exact size for my depth. I had to use the shallower shelves which shorted me over half an inch of available depth.

Some people have complained that the batteries can only be replaced from inside the safe, and this is true. However, it comes with two keys to manually open the safe in case the batteries fail. I like this, because it also allows the safe to be mechanically opened in case the electronic lock fails.Read more ›

If you're installing the safe yourself... buy something else. The instructions are completely inadequate. For example, several sizes of bolts, nuts, and washers are included, but the instructions will simply instruct you to attack one piece to another "with bolts" without specifying which size. The adjustable back, while a good idea, has a needlessly complicated design of three interlocking sleeves.

The worst part of the installation: the safe it attached to the wall studs from the inside with lag bolts. When you install these bolts in the slot provided in the housing, the heads of the bolts interfere with the travel of the door, preventing it from closing. I had to drill new holes in the fairly thick steel housing to get it to work.

Once installed, however, the safe seems to be of good quality and was easy to operate and set the access code. There is less usable space than you might think because the lock mechanism takes up at least 50 percent of the interior space. Also, there is no upholstery which is disappointing.

I looked for a month to find a wall safe that would work for me. I called around also and found that several resellers said that this was their number one selling wall safe. Since this had such a low price I was worried it was going to be junk but I was extremely please when I opened the box as it is very heavy and sturdy. The locking mechanism and the combination work perfectly and have the feel of a $300 safe. It is very sturdy. I agree with a couple other reviewers that the expanding back could be much easier to set up but my wife and I spent about 20-30 minutes with this and got it perfect, right up to the maximum depth my wall would allow. I don't mind this inconvenience because it fit perfectly and everything else works great and has a high quality feel. For $111 to $130 this is a steal!
