L-Tryptophan is an amino acid commonly found in many foods, but especially egg whites, and to a lesser extent, turkey. When consumed, L-Tryptophan causes a feeling of relaxation, and/or sleepiness, likely due to its ability to increase brain levels of serotonin (the "feel good" neurotransmitter) and/or melatonin. In caplet form, it is commonly taken to induce a sense of sleepiness, thus it's use as a natural sleep aid. Since it is a natural (and essential) amino acid, (with very little chance of an overdose) one can take one, two, or three caplets 30 minutes before bed to induce drowsiness. It works for me. The drowsiness sensation lasts about 1-2 hours. Therefore, it helps one fall asleep, but does not help with staying asleep greater than perhaps 2 hours maximum. L-Tryptophan is physically non-addicting. Like any substance, it won't work for everyone, since everyone's physiology is different. L-Tyrptophan is being studied as an adjunct to antidepressant medications, as well as a treatment for seasonal affective disorder.

L-Tryptophan tends to be a bit on the expensive side for an herbal formula, generally around or slightly more than 20 dollars a bottle for 90 caplets.

Life-Extension supplements are considered top-quality in the industry, but are also higher in price. L-Tryptophan can be found for slightly less money through other distributors (Swansons).

I take two capsules, along with other meds and supplements, before bed, and it helps me relax and fall asleep. It doesn't have any "druggy" side effect (no zombie-like feeling upon wakening :).

after trying so many 'help me sleep more than 4 hours/night' natural supplements, was dissapointed in this product, found the extended release formula to provide the best effect but of course that is difficult to locate, tryptophan is a wonderful supplement for sleep but adding the Plus ingredients detracted from the product so can recommend 5-HTP, Calm Magnesium powder, Magnesium Oil, Epsom Salt baths, but not this product, Life Extension has an extremely high quality line, use many of their other products, but this one just fell short imho...
