I purchased the hot knife tip because I work with small pieces of polyester to make doll clothes, and I had been using a flame from a candle to melt the edges of my material (too small to hem, as a hem would only make the project bulky looking). While the shaft of the mini-iron II does produce enough heat to melt the material into a sealed edge (as I checked before purchasing this attachment), the knife blade does not. It will cut through the material because it is a blade, but even on the hottest setting it will not make a clean, melted edge. The bottom of the blade is hottest because that is where it attaches into the iron, but the blade does not carry the same heat through to the tip to melt along the way. I tried the knife on a thinner material (lining material), but only had the same result. The only way I can make it work at all is if I cut the material and then run the flat side of the base of the blade along the cut edge of the material slowly enough to melt along the way, at which point I can get smooth edges faster with my open flame.

I like the convenience of a small iron while I'm working on a project. I like that I can use several different attachment so I don't have to invest in a lot of different tools.

I purchased this to cut polyester satin ribbon and it works quite well for that purpose. We have the heat tool this is designed for, and needed to replace the cutting tip. This is a great alternative to spending hundreds of dollars for a professional ribbon cutter.

I too thought this would be a good inexpensive hot knife but alas no. I was however able to modify it to work wonderfully as good as the much more expensive hot knives! I am very pleased with it now and have used it quite a bit on a variety of materials. I replaced the unfortunately ineffective xacto type blade with a piece of 18 or 20 gauge brass about 1/2inch by 1/4inch. I rounded one corner to make it easier to use. You can find metal strips like this in hobby stores and some hardware or art supply stores. It works great now! Use glass as a cutting surface.
