This compact charger for specific cameras in Sony's Cybershot line is compact, sturdy, and does a great job quickly charging Sony D, E, R, and T series lithium ion batteries. With its retractable (or "fold-out") rear plugs, it transports easily, there's no cord to store. (Some versions of this charger do have a cord instead of fold-out plugs).

But due to its popularity, a flood of counterfeit versions are appearing online (especially on ebay). Unfortunately some of these are now finding their way onto Amazon as well. They are poorly built, cheap imitations that pose a risk of battery damage and even fire. So how do you tell the difference? How do you make sure you're not getting a fake?

Here's how: On the bottom edge of the back of every genuine Sony BC-CS3 charger, you will find a series of etched identification numbers, usually 8-digits, inside a small rectangular box. (See the closeup photo I've added above, the numbers are clearly visible). Knockoff or fake chargers will not have these numbers, as they are difficult to duplicate. If you are buying a charger from somebody online, ask them to check for these numbers, or to email you a photo.

So, just look for the etched ID numbers, then you'll know you've got a genuine Sony product.

I don't want to take much of your time reading this review only to learn that this item is bogus. I will keep this review as short as possible.
I lost my original Sony charger and ordered this one. It never worked. I thought my battery was bad. But recently I charged the battery with an original SOny charger that I borrowed from my friend and my battery worked fine. In short, don't spend your money on this product.
Only positive side was that the order was shipped on time. And yes, the battery fits well into the charger. But for what use!!!

Bought this charger as a replacement for the original charger I lost during one of my travels overseas. Tried it once as soon as I received it to check if it worked and it sure did. Guess what after only two charges it started blinking and buzzing and the batteries weren't getting charged anymore. Tried two batteries on it - one about a year old and the other brand new. The charger killed the year old battery (which otherwise was holding charge good enough to last 150-200 shots). Took it to Best Buy to get it checked out. They hooked it up to a voltmeter, the charger was found to be only outputting at 2.1 Volts. Took it to Batteries+ and they told me the same thing.

At this point I contacted the seller and this is the response I got

"we apology , but we can not replace it after 90 days, standard warranty is for 30 day from us , after that manufacturers warranty apply, thanks"

Agreed, I contacted the sellers after 3 months but frankly, how often do we use our standalones nowadays? Anyways I left my pursuit at this point, didn't want to waste anymore of my time.

Good luck if you've already purchased this product! Others be wise to refrain...

I was expecting the charger that came with the T700 Cybershot to use as an extra when traveling...this one is not a "portable" charger but has a LONG electric cord you attach to it. It is very inconvienant to use and a waste of money. Item description does not say a thing about this LONG cord!

As suggested I ordered a product with an eched serial number. The battery charges, it just fits a little too loose into the cradle. It makes me wonder if Sony decided to make a change in production as my original that come with the camera fit snug and secure or if Sony made this one at all. I suppose it is not an issue I am just questioning the longevity of this charger as I lost the original and will not forgive myself.

Just returned from a 3 week long UK vacation and used the charger every day for our Sony camara and so far it has charged the OEM battery to capacity every time just like the OEM charger that originally came with the camera.

This is NOT a serialized item so we believe it is not a Sony product but it seems to be doing the job and it was a third of the price of a new OEM Sony charger.

Can't argue with that!

I can't say any thing bad about this product, or anything special. It does what it's supposed to. I purchased it to replace one I lost. Only to find the one I lost after receiving this one in the mail.

After a few months of charging my batteries just fine it stopped working! I have 3 batteries for my camera that all fit but won't charge anymore and will charge in another battery charger... so I know it's not my batteries. The light doesn't come on and I can't return it because it is past the 30 days. Buy something with a shelf life... This has no durability.
