This Dupli-Color Rust Fix worked well for converting the light rust scale that remained on some auto body panels after initial cleanup with a grinder and wire wheel. It turned the rust into a black coating that took lacquer based automotive primer/sealer without issue the next day. I also used it for a couple of minor rust spots on my trucks frame where the undercoating had been worn through, after the same type of initial prep with a wire wheel. Overall the product seems to do what is was supposed to, so I'm happy with it and would purchase again if needed.

DUPLI-COLOR Rust Converter, 10.25oz

I have used rust conversion primers since the 1980's and until now every brand I used worked as it should. This time it was utter frustration.

1. It sprayed just awful. Very heavy and spitting. Impossible to apply a light coat.
2. It did not convert the rust scale all the way through.
3. It did not turn black uniformly on the bare metal. Rust conversion primers typically will cure to a nice satin black sheen.
4. It is not sandible. Could not feather the edges.
5. Absolutely terrible adhesion to the metal. After over-coating with primer for surface prep, I masked and applied top coat. When I removed the tape (the best 3M sells) the primer and rust conversion primer came off with the tape down to bare metal.
6. Reacts to primer and topcoat solvents creating a visible scalloped feather edge.

I had to sand the pieces back down to bare metal and start over. I had purchased two cans and both acted exactly as I described. Any other brand should be okay.

We have a 1998 Jeep Wrangler TJ that has been passed down the family to our son. It is in overall excellent condition, but there was one thing that went unnoticed over the last couple years... the drain under the fresh air intake does not flow well, causing rain water to pool on the HVAC system and eventually overflow. When parked on a nose-up grade, that pool overflows onto the passenger side's front floor pan.

Since we have Husky Liners (Husky Liners Classic Style Custom Fit Molded Front Floor Liner for Select Jeep Wrangler TJ Models (Black)) over the carpet in the front (and in the rear too, actually), we did not notice the damp carpet underneath the liners until a few months ago... when I saw a little pool of water sitting inside the liner and investigated.

We caught the problem in time; no serious rust, but a decent amount (maybe 40% of the pan) was covered in surface rust and here is what we did to bring it back to looking like new:

1. Cleaned the pan with some Simple Green and dried it

2. Brushed the heck out of it with a good wire brush until as much of the rust was removed as possible

3. Vacuumed the rust dust away, then cleaned & dried it again

4. Sprayed the pan with this Dupli-Color Rust Fix and let it dry, then repeated twice more (lightly sanding between each coat and also after the final coat). This stuff worked very well, converting any remaining possible rust residue to a hard, sandable surface. It made a good foundation for the next step.

Nozzle clogged after a short time. I also didn't think much of the product as it really doesn't convert most of the rust. I think Duplicolor has lowered its quality significantly and is running on its reputation which won't last long at this rate. Most of the Duplicolor products that I have used lately suffer from one problem or another and I avoid any Duplicolor products if I can.

Hard to believe it's claims, I stripped an area that was rusting of all paint, ground out all remaining rust, flattened it out with bondo and sprayed this stuff and then paint and clear coat. A couple days later rust started popping up.

I bought at advance auto C.A.P for 6.99 a can to fix alot of under carrage rust on my dodge dakota. used two cans for one coat requires thre coats. but when it dries it dries black and has a chemical adhesion to rust so I would say yes this product works but you must apply three coats and you also need to apply a paint which I would use a hammered paint in light color to tell when rust comes back. but I would say that this definately prolongs the life of a frame etc..
