I've owned Vasque boots for the past 15 years. I've ruined 2 pair and have 1 pair that is still in good condition. When these boots were manufactured in Italy they were hands down the best pair of hiking/backpacking boots I've owned. When the company was bought out and manufacturing shipped to China the quality disappeared. 1 of the two pair i ruined was a Chinese made pair of Sundowners. They lasted less than two years and fell apart (ripped and soles seperated. I then purchased a pair of slightly used Italian made Vasque boots that I wore for 6 and a half years straight 5 days per week. I finally wore the soles off those boots and had to retire them. Vasque is simply no longer the manufacturer they were in those days.

So as for the review of this boot. You hear the above frequently from past Vasque owners but they tend not to explain why. So here goes. The reason loyal users are so upset is that the craftsmanship of these boots is so greatly inferior to what we were used to that we feel BETRAYED. The summit is heavy, clunky, stiff in the wrong places, not stiff in the places it should be,laces are cheap, and the design has many flaws. Honestly I think it would be dangerous to backpack with these boots. There is too much shifting of your foot because the laces and tounge are "flawed." When you shift your weight in this boot the entire mid section of the boot moves back and forth while the rest of the boot remains immobile. Not a good feature in a hiking boot! What's more the stitching in the tounge is thick in spots and created a pressure point directly on the outside of my ankle joint that was really painful. Tightening or loosening the laces did not remedy this. What's more, I found it nearly impossible to get the boot tight. Whenever I tried it created several painful pressure points.

I like the boots fine but after a few months the top speed ties (for the laces) started popping out. They aren't installed through the boot they're glued in place. I've never had this happen to even the cheapest pair of boot/shoes that I've ever owned. I'm very disapointed in that. All it would've taken was proper designing so that the clips were installed through the leather and then press fit large washers behind them. I would not recommend these obvious Chinese knock-offs of a once truly great product. Now I have to go out and find a resonable shoe repair person will to replace all 8 hooks.

Pros-Leather is very nice, plush, high volume, good gripping outsole, easy break in.

Cons-Made in China, thick outsole that is not the most stable while standing, not a full gore-tex boot.

Bought these because I thought they were made in USA and had a good price here at Amazon. Even though they use Red Wing leather the boot is constructed in China. A no-no for me. Vasque sold their soul when they moved production of possibly one of the best boots ever made-Sundowners-out of Italy. The new Sundowners are not even close to the old ones. I'm a boot whore and I have about 12 pair etc.

Overall quality is good. Leather is very good. Vibram outsole is very thick lending itself to be a little "tippsy" when standing. Not as sure footed as say a LaSportiva Karakorum or Zamberlan Civetta etc. Not unstable but not super stable. Gore-Tex liner ends at the footbed. High quality Gore-Tex boots use the full Gore-Tex bootie. Maybe not a huge deal just a little dissapointing. Volume is high so you will be able to layer socks or just wear thick ones no problem. Insole was just OK. Aftermarket insert like superfeet work well with these but IMO not as necessary as other boots. Medium stiffness. Minimal break in. Lacing system is solid. Tongue is nice and thick. Laces are cheapish.

A decent boot for everyday wear although some will find it too heavy. I normally wear La Sportiva Karakorum or Makalus, Zamberlan Civetta so I am used to wearing heavy boots.

I've never seen any boot or shoe come apart like this one. I bought an earlier version of this a few years ago, and within months the sole and pieces of the boot started cracking. I wore them hiking once or twice, got no more than 30 or 40 wears out of them, and the sole on one literally started to come off. I wore them once more to do some work on the farm, and both soles came completely detached from the leather.

I don't wear boots regularly so by the time I got around to contacting the company, I had lost any receipt and of course it was beyond the warranty. I appreciate that you can't warranty footwear forever, but the tread on these hadn't even started to wear before the soles both came off.

The company never even responded to two different requests. Vasque has a great reputation, but you really can't afford to pay $200 if the sole's going to come off and the company won't stand behind it.

The insoles are cheap and worthless. The tongue is very thin And causes extreme anterior ankle pain. Bothl medial malleolus were painful within the first hour. I only walked about a hundred yards and had to take them off. I hope they can be worn when I replace the insoles and padded tongue. I also hope that the rest of the boots hold up and the quality is not as cheap as what I just encountered.
