I bought this item to have a handy reference guide for learning music theory on the guitar and have been
thoroughly pleased and impressed with how smart and useful this gizmo has been. Not being a trained musician,
this has helped me understand aspects of music theory as a stand alone aid and is even better when used in
conjunction with other music theory books. This tool takes some effort to understand (there's lots of information
contained on it), but it proves to be an extremely useful reference tool once you learn how to use it.
Much more than a circle of fifths wheel!

Sometimes you get lucky in life. I did. I was checking out my latest copy of Guitar Player magazine and there it was: The Guitar Wheel!

As a guitar teacher, I am always looking for material that will make my life and my students' studies easier, and here it was laid out in front of me. I ordered mine immediately, and it is the only material that I require my students to purchase for study. Here are a couple of reasons why.

The Guitar Wheel not only has a "Guitar Side" that shows the correct string numbering for newbies, but it also has a "Music Theory" side with a "Piano Keyboard" that I find very useful to illustrate intervals and to fix in my students heads the relationships of B to C and E to F.

Right above the keyboard are your "Enharmonic Equivalents" which helps get you oriented to the idea that notes (pitches) can and do have multiple names i.e.; A# =Bb, B=Cb. "Concert Pitch" is illustrated, and this is very important if you are playing with other instruments such as a Bb sax. Here you find that if the sax is playing in C major, you're playing in Bb major (Guitar comes under Piano in this case).

I could go on. But suffice it to say this tool is exactly what I was looking for, and I love showing it to my students.

Most of the other reviews have pretty much covered just about everything I would say however I still want to say I love this tool. Not being someone who has had a lot of theory under my belt, it's been useful to help me learn the letters of keys. Slowly I am making progress at memorizing key signatures so that I know where I am on the fretboard & where I can go from there. I use it by putting it on my music stand, dialing in the key I want, turn on the drum machine & simply play the chords in that key to the beat. Then when I want to practice the relevant scales of the key, I simply look at the letters and count the fingering for the corresponding note. It's that easy.

I will say that I do agree that the instructions are a wee bit too thin for my taste but music notation & theory is not a subject that the average player is adept with. Most folks are self taught like moi where theory is concerned. To really grasp it, one simply has to plod along actually performing the exercises repeatedly. But with rote repetition, eventually comes that "Eureka!" moment from time to time & more falls into place.

Unlike some others, I'm not one to lug something this around in my gig bag. Who really is going to set & study material like this prior to a gig? That's what you do at home and it's called 'Practice' for a reason.

I give this 5 out of 5 stars because it really is a fantastic learning tool & is relatively simple to use as long as you have some inkling of music theory. If not, you may want to take some lessons & then use this as a study guide along with your regular lessons.

For me, this thing right now is making my head explode. I "get" the concepts and it is really a neat device. I am going to have to spend some time to internalize this thing conceptually. They have a website that I spent some time on this morning, and I have already picked up some help from the website. It will be somewhat of a learning curve for a lot of folks, and perhaps for some who already have some theory under their belts it will speed things up. I can't endorse this thing highly enough. Although somewhat pricey, it is NOT made out of cheap cardboard and should be a reference tool that will last for 30+ years I would imagine. Overall, I am glad I bought it. Actually, I bought two- one for me and one for my nephew who will be getting a guitar for Christmas along with the Guitar Wheel and other learning material. He already plays trumpet in the school band and I envision this tool making more sense to him in a shorter period of time than for me.

Reviewing primarily as a guitar player, who has a lot of books with chord/scale information, but I wanted a quick, portable reference. The Guitar Wheel has good information on chords to use in a specific key. It would be nice to have common scale patterns, and I would give up the piano side to have common guitar scale patterns. In addition, I used a permanent marker to add the CAGED system pattern to the Tonic Chord Inversion section as a handy way to look at CAGED chords, and view root position chords. Still a decent reference that can do a little more if you draw it in with a marker.

I love this little device!

I'm an amateur musician so I'm on and off on playing. I play enough I need to know theory, but not so often I don't forget the specifics.

This gizmo lets me refresh all of those pesky details with the slide of a tab.

I don't believe this is a tool to teach people music theory, but it is a wonderful reference once you know what you're looking for.

For example, I'm playing with the harmonica now. Simple little instrument right? Well that simple little instrument has you thinking about major, minor, major pentatonic, minor pentatonic, and blues scales in 12 different keys! One section of this wheel lists all of these different scales. Rotate the dial to the key you're interested in and the individual notes for each of these scales in the key you've selected appears. Nice.

Although I play guitar, I find the other side of the wheel less helpful. Yes it does show you how to play diatonic chords (MmmMMmD)but they are barre chords based upon the "E" chord. If you understand the formation of an E barre chord and its family (E, Em, E7, Esus, Esus4, etc), this may not be so helpful. I really don't use E barre chords much beyond the 7 fret as I usually switch to the "A" type barre chord based off of the 5th string so my hand has much less distance to travel. I've not found anything to support these "A" type barre chords nor the others: D, G, C.

I find the music theory side of the wheel worth the price and the disillusionment with the guitar side my be due to my ignorance.
