After doing my own research for CFS and "adrenal fatigue", I decided to roll the dice and try this. I hVe been to three psychiatrists and a GP and none of them knew what to do besides give scripts. I tried with no faith in it at all, having already treid various things for the last two years--5htp, theanine, gaba, vitamins c, b, d, omega 3s, a very strict raw diet, wellbutrin, lexapro, and adderall.

Licorice root was claimed to work by slowing the breakdown of cortisol. I felt like I had "subclinical addisons" and my cortisol was low. None of my physicians thought to even test for it.

Sure enough, after I started taking ir on a thursday, I felt AWESOME by sunday. Followed the directions and I am very happy with it. No side effects except do not take any after late after noon. Normally cortisol drops at night so if you keep taking this to late it will interfere with your sleep.

I used to always feel so TERRIBLE when I awoke. Also couldnt sleep deeply and had very very hard time concentrating. Not anymore! I really cant believe it. A fricken natural herb that grows out of the ground with no side effects was the solution the whole time! The Chinese have been using it for 5000 years.

It seems like all we hear in the media hiw "unproven" and "dangerous" alternative medicine is, and yet, it is the only thing that helped!

WHAT IS 'NATURE'S WAY LICORICE CAPSULES'?

I prefer this specific "Nature's Way" Licorice if I don't have "Certified Organic" powdered root on hand. "Nature's Way" is an excellent brand and I have used this specific product side-by-side against "NOW" and "Swanson's Brand", and I can taste and feel the difference. Nature's Way is usually more pungent and stronger-tasting [if you open the capsules], and I do feel more stomach-cramp relief from it. Having said that, the "Certified Organic" ground root is the way to go as long as you know when it was ground. If you don't have daily access to "Certified Organic" then you can't go wrong with "Nature's Way". "NOW" would be my second choice.

I have taken "Nature's Way" licorice almost daily since 2003 as an aid to digestion and for relieving stomach cramps. It is also useful as an immune booster or as an adjunct to any herbal combination used against cold, flu, or digestive-system complaints. In Chinese Medicine it is considered a "minister herb", which make other herbal medicines more available to the body. Another minister herb is ginger, which gives me indigestion if I take too much of it or too often. Licorice generates moisture and tonifies and invigorates ch'i [the life force] according to Chinese Medicine.

I had been warned that it might raise my blood pressure and produce a potassium deficiency if it were taken for more than a week. I MONITOR BLOOD PRESSURE 4-6x daily and have not noticed any increase taking 6-8 capsules per day. Also, added to any tea, it is very effective against dry coughs and aids in making them more productive. Its taste is complementary and almost invisible as long as you don't add more than 2 capsules per full cup of tea.

Nature's Way Licorice is part of an adrenal fatigue healing program I am on. It is working to prevent the breakdown of cortisol in my body. I am feeling more energetic, less pain, and improved sleep at night. I take it in the morning and early afternoon so it helps during the day.

Real licorice like this (unlike anise-flavored candy) is a very effective medication that everyone should consider using in certain situations. However, if you have high blood pressure, you may want to avoid this one and consider taking DGL licorice. The wonderful master health guru Dr. Andrew Weil advises everyone to take DGL licorice. The chewable DGL from Amazon is a very good product for soothing the stomach and the whole digestive system. DGL means that the glycyrrhizin compound has been removed, making it safer for hypertensive folks. So why would anyone want to take this product? I take this one at certain times of the year because I don't have a hypertension problem, so I can get the benefits of glycyrrhizin. What does glycyrrhizin do for you? For me, the main reason to take this "whole" licorice is for the antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties of glycyrrhizin. I discovered this while looking into Dr. Michelle Hardy's research on rotavirus (Washington State University). She found that licorice greatly reduced morbidity in calves infected with rotavirus. If you have ever had the vomiting and diarrhea from either norovirus or rotavirus infections, you know you never want to go through that again. So now in the fall, winter, or springtime when I hear about people in my work building getting the "stomach flu" I start taking the licorice. The glycyrrhizin in whole licorice also has antiviral properties against a range of other viruses, including HIV, hepatitis B and C, flaviviruses (like dengue, West Nile virus, and yellow fever) and even influenza. Glycyrrhizin interferes with receptor binding and or replication of many viruses.Read more ›
