John Rutter is an amazing composer. I've had the privilege of singing many of his arrangements, and I've also had the privilege of spending five years singing under the composer who has recently supplanted him as the bestselling choral arranger in the world, Mack Wilberg.

There is one flaw that I have noticed in the Cambridge Singers Christmas CDs. Rutter loves American Spirituals and jazz, and often includes arrangements of pieces like "Go Tell it On the Mountain." The problem is, 28 voices trained in the British/European cathedral style of singing just aren't muscular enough to really pull of the spirituals. With the addition of a second choir here, the spirituals work better.

This is not a bad entrant into the Rutter canon.

A LOVELY CD for those who want to hear traditional choral arrangements of Christmas. Soothing and lovely, I listen to this A LOT during the season. It is a delightful antidote to the *stuff* routinely played on the radio at Christmastime. Just beautiful!

This new CD is stunning with wonderful music from various composers. some new to me, and, a wonderful new John Rutter composition. This orchestral and choral recording just adds the richness and beautfy to all of the music offered. I have been a church organist for many years and have had the wonderful opportunity of playing Mr. Rutter's music, as well as other wonderful choral anthems of other British composers. I highly recommend this to all viewers!!!

John Rutter, the Farnham choir, Melanie Marshall, the Cambridge Singers and all the others are just a delight to hear. Track 4 of Deck the Halls in Welsh is fantastic with vocal gymnastics by Elin Manahan Thomas. Must look for more of her performances. Melanie Marshall's voice is just so rich. It was great to add some new Christmas music to our collection.

This CD isn't nearly as pleasant to listen to as John Rutter's Christmas Night (Carols of the Nativity). It seems kind of harsh, while Christmas Night is extremely mellow and listenable. I'm grading it as to whether it's enjoyable rather than whether it's an important contribution to the canon, or as to other factors that might cause people to like it.

I was introduced by Rutter's recordings to no-vibrato singing. I had always just put up with having to listen to singing (with its annoying vibrato) until I heard Rutter. What a revelation! I found that there's nothing so absolutely beautiful as this kind of singing. I adopted this no-vibrato style with the church choir I direct and we've been angelic wannabes for years. Now I obtain the present recording. It's a let down, an absolute betrayal of all the former standards of singing which I had so greatly admired for many years. It's a return to the barbarisms of the past, or maybe just a return to the sound of almost any other choir one hears in the US, any other choir that uses vibrato, which to me just sounds repellant and something I'd rather not listen to.
This recording also has way too many solos. I bought it for the choral music, especially the beautiful 'I wish You Christmas', which is a rarity on this recording in that it is sung with the old no-vibrato style as of old. But all the solos could just as easily have been done as choral arrangements, especially 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas', a solo all the way through.
In closing, except for 'I Wish You Christmas', I will probably not play any more of this CD.

One of the best CD's for John Rutter. I just can't enjoy the Christmas season without listening to the music of John Rutter.

John Rutter's musical arrangements are so special! The fanfare to Adeste Fideles is amazing! I also loved the New Year song.
Now, where can I buy the songbook for a choir?
