1. Complaints of sugar as an ingredient is an error introduced by Amazon (from the regular list of ingredients? vs.'no sugar' variety). I have a box of the no sugar and yes it DOES NOT CONTAIN SUGAR! It does have raisins and the sugar content is 8g per serving.
2. The cereal is greatly improved by adding yogurt, milk, sour cream or hot water, or a combo. Let it sit. I also add a banana, and some frozen cherries or fresh blueberries. Endless choices. Made this way it is a filling hearty breakfast akin to that i ate in Switzerland. Often I prep a bowl the night before and leave in the fridge. It's all you need for an active day.
3. The price at my local market was $5.99, via Amazon (with Amazon Prime and no frt.) is $4.45/box. Since I could not find in affordable supers this is a good deal. You can try one box also (pricier) if you're shy to pay for 6. If you dress it up w. fresh fruits etc. it delivers on both taste and nutrition.

I'm extremely pleased to see Amazon offering this cereal. Alpen (No Sugar Added version) is the best muesli available in Britain. Believe me, I've tried most of them (British expat). And your American mueslis don't come anywhere close to the deliciousness of this. Swiss-style muesli in general is much easier to eat than traditional muesli - mainly due to the fact that it softens in milk much faster and it includes whey powder which makes it a little sweeter and creamier when you add milk. I've tried a few other brands of Swiss-style muesli and this one beats the lot. It has just the right amount of raisins and nuts in it. :-)
A perfect breakfast, can't wait to eat it again!

Cereal with nuts and no preservatives can develop a rancid taste pretty quickly if it's not consumed before the "sell by" date.

Unfortunately the order we received from Amazon was over two months past its expiration date, and it noticeably tasted stale.

It took quite a while to find the sell-by date. The Alpen box is a very light tan color, and the date is printed in white on the box top. It's practically invisible. I had to angle it just right toward a light source in order to read it.

Amazon does not accept returns of grocery items, which is a good policy, but they did give a prompt refund.

Judging from the other reviews, I'm sure the cereal is excellent when it's fresh. We may try it again in the future.

Delicious and very good for you. This is a chewy cereal that is very satisfying. Even your kids will love it. Multi, whole grain with almonds, hazel nuts and raisins for natural sweetness. I encourage you to try this cereal, you will not go back to the overly sweet, non nutient, American grocery store type of cereal

I gave this such a bad rating because I don't like being tricked. This cereal most certainly does contain added sugar and it isn't fair to claim otherwise. It might be legal, I really don't know, but, I know it isn't fair.

While it is true that it does not contain the brown sugar listed on the ingredients, it does contain the malt extract. Malt extract is the sweetener bakers used for years before high fructose corn syrup came along.

Malt extract is sugar extracted from barley. Broken down, malt extract contains: 1-2% fructose, 7 - 10% glucose, 1-3% sucrose, 39-42% maltose, 10-15% maltotriose, 25-30% higher saccharides.

Sadly, I didn't know this prior to buying it. I saw all the comments about it not containing sugar, and the huge "no sugar added" label on the front, and thought I was ok. I don't eat sugar at all, and when any is introduced in my diet, I really notice it. I looked up malt extract and discovered the above information. How can they say this is no "sugar" added?

At least malt extract is the last ingredient on the list, and they list ingredients by quantity. It is a low sugar cereal for sure, it certainly isn't the sugary stuff that they market to kids. But, this isn't a no sugar added cereal.

If you avoid sugar and prefer not to include it in your diet for whatever reason, look up malt extract and decide for yourself what substance you call it. I call it sugar.

I hope this helps you make a decision as to whether this product is right for you.

Still the small boxes, rather than the big bags that I used to be able to pick up in London Supermarkets, but this is the cheapest most reliable place to buy I know in the US. It seems to be randomly available at other supermarkets elsewhere and often at extreme mark-ups.

No sugar added is a dubious claim. When you taste it, it is sweet. The ingredient label says that it contains "malt extract".
Malt extract is likely maltose, which is malt sugar, derived from malted grains. Maltose is absolutely sugar, in fact it has a higher glycemic index number than sucrose and even the much maligned fructose.
Your body does not care if the sugar came from cane, sugar beets or malted grains. Sugar is sugar. It causes weight gain, blood sugar swings and health issues like diabetes. Not to mention of course that it contains dried fruits which are loaded with fructose. Funny that people avoid "high fructose corn syrup" like the plague, but eat fresh fruits and drink fruit juice, each loaded with exactly the same fructose. Don't even get me started on agave syrup, which is corn syrup on steroids.

On a plus note, it is absolutely delicious and a huge wallop of dietary rough fiber. I just wish it were a little more austere and less sweet.
