We use the Obey 70 to control one universe of 6 moving fixtures (Martin MAC250 Entours) at my church. While the learning curve is high and it requires a little bit of manual set up and configuration, once you get the Obey set up the joystick and the DMX assignment is very easy. The preset buttons make setting up scenes a snap. MIDI control allows you to get even fancier. I can't say that I've ever used the chase functionality but I assume it would work as expected.

I'm happy to say that you can't beat the functionality for the price in a small, compact, hardware unit. There are lots of software solutions out there but for a 2U rackmount you can't beat the Obey.

Manual is poor, but there's good functionality here. 30 banks, each with up to 8 sets of programs. Six chase scenes, which I wish there were a few more, honestly, but it's okay. Each program can program up to 12 sets of fixtures.

Couple of nit picks, but relative to the price, this is a fantastic controller.

1) The joystick is a nice feature, if you are using something with movable heads, but it sits at position 15 and 16, so depending on your lights settings, some things you wish you could control with a slider may have to be controlled via the joystick. I understand you can remap things, but I still wish it didn't sit right there.

2) Between page A and B, there are 32 "sliders" (really 4 less since some of them are controlled via joystick). I'm using among others a Chauvet ColorBand PIX, which has 12 RGBA lights. In 18 channel mode, I can control the lights in pairs of 2. It supports 36 channel mode, to control lights individually, but the Obey controller only has 32 positions, so I can't use that mode, I can't control the last light at all, or the blue for the second to last light. Again, weigh the price of the controller, it's still fantastic for the price.

3) There's a big disconnect between timer/fader as sliders, and as pre-programmed scene settings. You can save timer/faders into a scene, but then if you bump the fader, it overrides it, until you hit program again.

4) When activating a chase, it doesn't deactivate a previous chase. So if you are running chase 1, and hit chase 2, it will cycle through chase 1, then 2, then back to one. We often forget this, and forget to deactivate the older chase.

5) Every issue above is minor. My one major gripe is changing from scene to scene across banks.Read more ›

Took some time to learn the lay out of the dmx channels, it is more than i would ever need. the only other thing, is just wish that there was better instruction manual, and a keypad for manual number entering.

Our annual church Christmas musical needed additional lighting for a drama set, so this Obey 70 was purchased to handle the 12 fixtures that were borrowed. The fixtures included 8 Chauvet SlimPar 64s and 4 Chauvet Intmidator LED Spot 150s.The Obey 70 handles 12 fixtures, so this was the ideal unit for the price. The unit worked as expected. Easy to program as well as operate. During initial rehearsals, this controller was used in front of the stage to make sure the moving heads hit their cues. It was then decided to relocate the board back to the sound booth with the rest of the equipment. To complement this controller, the Cinolink DMX Wireless DMX 2.4 Ghz Transmitter & Receiver 2 Units Kit was also purchased from Amazon. This was the least expensive alternative for wireless DMX, and it performed great right out of the box. This made a very affordable combination of wireless DMX with the Chavet Obey 70.

Not sure why there are not better reviews of this board? After using it for a few weeks, I find it absolutely amazing. I can take manual control of my Intimidator 150 Spot LEDs with the joystick and do some amazing manual scenes. You can also program up to 80 scenes and programming is easy once you get the hang of it. I also run 4 LED can lights and a fog machine easily with the board and have room to still add an additional 3 fixtures. Overall it took very little time with the manual and I was saving scenes and remapping controls!

Why can't you give something zero stars impossible to operate so I went with chevet show express I heard and saw it is a lot better than American DJ my Dmx 2.0!! Show express is much more pricey but you will not regret it if you're thinking about buying this don't!!

Works alright, better for making scenes than controlling lights live as if you un-select a fixture it blacks out.. so you can only really live control one set of fixtures at a time. Also rather glitchy, lights stop responding or don't respond as they are supposed to.

Great little board for smaller shows, surprisingly controls moving lights as well! I wish I could specify DMX numbers for fixtures and not use fixed numbers, but thats a small issue for a great board at a great price.
