I've had three of these, two leaked brand new out of the box and the third had the bottom come right off of it after being used for about a year. It's a real shame they have not quality control for this product.

UPDATE 3/6/2014
***************

I purchased a replacement, Lifegard wouldn't make right on the defective units because it was an older model even though they were never used until now. New Lifegard FB300 came with a slight design difference which may have corrected the LEAKING GLUED TOGETHER BOTTOM PLATE. However, I cannot test the unit I purchased as it came missing parts. Lifegard is mailing the missing parts out but it will a week or more before I can use the product I had priority shipped. In total I am out about $250, had one replacement previously and 3 major leaks. Lucky for me my tanks weren't set up where a leak could cause damage to floors/cielings/carpet and I was around to catch the leaking early.

I call no joy on the Lifegard Fluidized Beds and thier customer service lacking in compasion for known issues with their products.

This would offer an immense amount of biological filtration for the dollar except for two stupid design flaws. First, anytime the power goes off and the filter loses flow, the sand fills up the input tube. This requires removing the sand through the hole in the top and replacing it the same way, which is an extraordinarily tedious task. Second, the seal on the bottom is very poor quality. I've had two develop leaks, one right out of the box. Lifeguard probably saved a dime in manufacturing costs and the result was a very bad product. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Wasted a day setting it up. It dumped a bunch of sand into my display tank and then leaked in two places despite the plumbing tape provided. One of the places is unable to even be rigged as its a problem with the O ring that is on the button to control the flow (hence the sand going everywhere into the display tank). After it proved to be difficult to configure in the tank I moved it to my sink so it would be safer than wrecking my display tank. From the sink I could take my time trying to rig the plumbing into actually not leaking. I spent several hours. Honestly complete waste of a day and failed product with a messed up display tank. All in all, horrible product. Video attached of the failure.

I had 2 of these filters at one time on both saltwater and freshwater and they work great. I ran one as biological filtration off of a Magnum HOT 250 instead of their Biowheel. The other I ran off of a simple 15gph powerhead. It doesn't take much pressure at all to run but it does take pressure to push through the sand to get them started. They can be finicky to setup right the first time because of the slow nature of the sand. You have to balance the level of the sand at the maximum line or sand will leak out into the tank. But once you get it right it becomes virtually maintenance free and keeps all the levels very low (except nitrates - thats what plants are for).

Pros:
Excellent biological filtration once its setup and established
Takes up little space on the back of the tank
easily visible for quick inspection

Cons:
if power goes out or sand is allowed to settle it can be a pain in the a** to get it going again

I would definitely buy again

This filter worked well when it worked. You need a separate power head to run the Lifeguard. I had great difficulty getting the Lifeguard going again everytime I cleaned the power head and hooked it back up. I ended up getting rid of it - too much hassle. They need to provide a dedicated, matched powerhead and connections - the list in the instruction manual of compatible units is not accurate!
