Red Devil is nothing like DOW Seal-n-Peal

I swear I am not from, nor do I know anyone from either company, but I have been using Dow's product for about 25 years now and it's great. I don't know what I would do without it.
This past fall though, I thought I'd try Red Devil's sealing product thinking it would be the same stuff but a little cheaper. What could be bad?
Well, It smelled worse, would not stick to the windows, and one had to be a football linebacker to get the stuff out of the tube. This became a panic since I had just the one day allotted to get approximately 200 windows caulked up at my two rental houses. All of my tenants were notified that this was the day and I had done my warm up exercises (both mental and physical) the day before. I was burning mad.
I tried to use the Red Devil, but could not get past the first tube. I had to throw it all down and run to the hardware store to get some DOW. Luckily, they had enough for me to do the job.
I will say that the store that sold the Red Devil returned my money promptly without hassle.
But! I will never sell me soul to the Devil again!

Not a good experience at all

Pro:

It does seal from air infiltration, and it doesn't have the solvent vapor problems that some people are sensitive to.

Con:

It is messier to apply than the solvent based product. It has a lower viscosity, so that it really gets into small spaces and sticks, which is a problem during removal. The product has higher adhesion than the solvent based caulk, but a lower dry tensile strength so that removal is really a problem. It sticks and tears into small bits rather than pulling off in a continuous length like the other product. With twenty hours of removal time and fourteen ruined windows, I am not a happy customer. I bought this product at a local supplier and not from Amazon, but I feel strongly enough about the liabilities of this stuff to review here so as to warn others. If fumes are a problem for you (and I can understand that) use rope caulk or a painters tape that you can leave on long term, or even some plastiscene modeling clay. There may be removal problems with these, but nothing nearly as bad. In my opinion avoid this product.

Avoid this product

After using DAP products for the past six years on our 160 year old home, we assumed all products were the same. The ONLY advantage to this product was that it didn't smell awful. (I had no trouble getting it out of the tube.) It does not dry transparent (it is a dirty yellowish color when dry) and it's impossible to put on neatly. We spent the last week trying to open our 33 window. Normally this is a half-day job. This year we have spent at least two hours per window. It peels up the paint when it's pulled off. Our windowsills look like heck. I'm SO sorry we tried to save a few bucks. Never, ever again.

Great stuff

I have many odd - shaped windows. My windows have 1/4" gaps in place from years of settling. Eventually I'll refabricate the frames, but mean time this works. (My mother used the plastic windows with stick tape-- keeps the drafts out but destroys the woodwork). I had fabricated simple removable storms, but the gaps require something more. This year Ilm going to try using it outside for temp fix and will report how it stands up. I have NOT tried the similar DAP product, but this stuff has been a life-saver.

This stuff is awful!

We have used other similar products in the past and I have had not trouble removing them in one long strip...not true with Zip-a-Way.I am watching my husband try to remove it with solvents, Goo Gone etc. with no luck. He is now taking the window out to scrape it off. What a disaster...do not use this brand unless you want lots of hard work and headaches removing it!!!

Clearly the worst possible choice

Goes on pretty easy and seals pretty well but removal is a nightmare. Adhesion to surfaces is greater than other products (Seal N' Peel) so it doesn't peal off easily and damages some surfaces in the process. Tensil strength is minimal so it falls apart as you try to pull it off. I ended up having to use a putty knife and still can't remove everything. What was a couple minute job to cleanly unseal a window with Seal N' Peel becomes an eternity with Zip-A-Way, never fully is removed and damages the window surface in the process.

DON'T BUY!!!!

Beware.

I've used similar items in the past and have been happy with a seasonable weather stripping caulk option. Red Devil's brand DOES NOT come off easily. In fact it seems to be like removing standard caulk. What should be a quick removal will likely take MANY hours and require some scraping and damage. I can't believe they can sell this as a Zip-A-Way sealant. I cannot warn people enough to stay away.

Bad product, No response from Red Devil

In Oct 2012, I purchased a tube of Red Devil Zip-A-Way. When I attempted to use it on Dec 1 2012, I found that the product had begun to harden in the tube. With great force, I was able to extrude it from the nozzle, but it would not stick properly. Since this is not an inexpensive product, I contacted Red Devil Customer Support via email, attached an image of the codes (assumed to be date/production run) from the tube bottom, and asked for a replacement tube or my money back. I HEARD NOTHING BACK. Bad product. Even worse customer service. Deserves ZERO stars.

This is not a long-term sealant or adhesive. i use it to seal my leaky windows each fall, and it just Zips off in the spring. it is great for that purpose. Read more

i read about this in Family Handyman... this stuff is fantastic. Seal all your unused drafty windows and doors... then, in the spring, zip out the sealant in a minute. Read more
