I never thought I'd see Richard P. Havens 1983 reissued, but man am I glad it's back. Originally this came out around 1969 as a double record set and did I ever wear out the grooves. There are some outstanding original compositions here like "Stop Pulling and Pushing Me", "The Parable Of Ramon", "Indian Rope Man", "No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed", "Just Above My Hobby Horse's Head" and "Run Shaker Life" (performed live at Woodstock along with "Freedom"). All are marked by Richie's inimitable frenetic rhythm guitar and distintive vocal stylings.

There are also great covers of Lennon & McCartney songs. "She's Leaving Home", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Lady Madonna" and "With A Little Help From My Friends" These are reinvented with Richie's typical warmth and raw passion. And he delivers a beautiful version of Leonard Cohen's "Preists", a song that suits his voice so well. Now what would a Richie Haven's album be without a Bob Dylan song? Well fret not, "I Pity The Poor Immigrant" will not disappoint. And Donovan's "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" never sounded as heartfelt and sincere as it does in Richie's more than capable hands.

Having Richard P. Havens, 1983 back and spinning on my CD player is like a visit from an old friend. You know, someone you never grow tired of, someone who always has something new and interesting to say, and someone you miss dearly when gone, just as I've missed this album for so long. On a personal note, I was fortunate enough to see Richie Havens in the Spring 0f 1973 at My Father's Place, a small club in Roslyn, NY. I can still see him seated on a tall bar stool, wearing a dashiki, strumming away on his guitar and singing as only he can...What an evening that was and oh what a wonderful artist he is! Thanks old friend for so many years of wonderful music and great memories. It's like you were never away.

Richie Havens is a folk music mastermind. He is unreal. This is an incredible album that lacks only one thing, supply.

Richie Havens
"Richard P. Havens, 1983"

This is a fantastic Havens album from 1969, which has been given a proper CD release by Raven.

This CD has 9 of Richie's own great compositions (10 if you count one of the two bonus tracks) and he, as usual, gives amazing interpretations to the songs written by others.

When asked why he titled this 1969 album "1983", Richie replied, "...it's the year before (Orwell's) 1984". Indeed, even with (or perhaps because of) the great diversity of songs and styles on this album, it does give the impression of being the last stand for creative freedom before the hammer comes down.

This is a solid Five Star release.

So many people think of Richie Havens as the guy dancing, sweating and chanting "freedom" as he opened the Woodstock Festival in 1969. That was him all right, but he was so, so much more.

I first heard Richie Havens on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1969. He performed "The Parable of Ramon" and it blew my little 18 year old brain right out the top of my head. I ran out the next day and bought the album, THIS album. Not only does it contain "Ramon," it contains a variety of songs he wrote as well as covers of some very familar works. One of the selections on this enhanced cd version of the original double album is "Handsome Johnny," which he used to open Woodstock. In 1969, he also had the audacity to include his interpretations of a number of Beatles tunes including the sacrosanct "Strawberry Fields Forever." Richie Havens did with "Strawberry Fields" exactly what he did every time he opened his mouth to sing: he made it his own.

Richard P. Havens 1983 made a huge impact on me in 1969 and I still had the album - until recently. A couple of years ago, I bought a usb turntable here on Amazon and converted my vinyl not available on cd. "1983" was not yet released on cd. My vinyl still sounded pretty great, but years of wear had taken some toll.

When I heard the terrible news that the world had lost Richie Havens, I looked on here again and found Richie Havens 1983 on cd, so I snapped it up. It's great to have a clean copy of this landmark album. Richie's distinctive voice, his perfect phrasing and his original style and interpretations - this album still resonates.

And guess where my original vinyl copy of this album is...it is one of the vinyl LP's which the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame wanted from my collection. From the arresting cover to the end of the "second side," Richie Havens will hold you - and stay with you.

It's a shame this is hasn't been redistributed on a larger scale. I have it on vinyl, but would love to get my hands on the CD. Richie uses his unconventional guitar strumming style and his unique, soulful voice to perform songs of social consciousness. Well performed, well produced studio recordings and live performances that have cut through to the core of my being and have connected with me on a very profound level.

This is a must-have for any Richie Havens fan, it is the most balanced and at the same time the most eclectic. I remember listening to my dad's vinyl copy as a teenager, and this offered me such a welcome respite from the dregs of contemporary music of my time (the 80s) and while it is completely a folk abum of the 60s, it was devoid of the dreamy syrup of Havens's contemporaries. Havens was a master of his craft, much like Mississippi John Hurt was a master of his acoustic blues from the 30s. The greatest cut on this album is "Parable of Ramon" - the sparsity of the lyrics are brought to a full tapestry of human misery with the two guitars and the haunting wail of a baby in the background of this live track. You must have this album - play it and create your own nostalgic hammock in time.
