"Breathing" vs. "Venting"

Gotta face it - If I want a shirt to block UV rays it's not going to breathe like loosely woven cotton. This shirt compensates very well, though, with ventilation. It's awesome. There are strips of mesh venting that run up the sides of the shirt and continue around and down the insides of the sleeves. It's the best ventilated shirt I've seen yet. I was amazed when I discovered the venting because I couldn't see it until I looked closely. Best uses: Hot & dry, or cool weather regardless of humidity. It's my 2nd favorite outdoor shirt, but only because it's 100% nylon instead of the 70% nylon/30% poly of my other ExOfficios. The difference is very minor, though. Plus, for looks and fit the Reef Runner wins hands down.

Great shirt

Like all other ExOfficio products, this is another great shirt.
I got some bad advice from the reviews and ordered a Large. The size if anything runs a bit large (NOT SMALL) so if you're a medium, order a medium.
The material is excellent and very light. Perfect for sailing or just a summer day.
I find I can even get away with wearing this to a fancy place as they're sufficiently stylish shirts.

Breathable, Excellent

I usually settle with medium because I have broad neck and shoulders, but with ExOfficio I'm able to happily wear a small where the arms are the right length. Compared to standard fitting clothes I'd say ExOfficio runs big as rule of thumb, but for people that aren't petite they are great.

They are thin without being see-through and have sort of cheese cloth-ish vents running down the sides wear a seam usually runs. It is about an inch wide, if you look closely you can see it in the picture. At first I thought you'd be able to see through it, but unless you are wearing a size that is too small and as a result it is skin tight- people shouldn't be able to see through the shirt. Long story short it is an athletic type shirt, but you could easily wear it around the office unless you work in a true professional setting it shouldn't be a problem.

A lot of their button shirts are advertised as "UV protection" and "bug repellent", I don't have any review on the authenticity to this. I mean I've never gotten a sunburn while wearing a shirt... maybe it's different when you are fishing or out in the wild? And the bug repellent? No idea, I don't see how it'd last after you wash it; otherwise, wouldn't all of the clothes washed at the same time also benefit from the bug repellent technology? Anyways neither of these features are advertised for this particular shirt so this is just my 2 cents on the brand's advertising gimmicks.

Overall I love these shirts because they actually fit, shoulders, chest, and arm length; neck too. They are also nice and comfy while retaining the look of a casual shirt. The fit alone makes it worth the premium price, all the other stuff is just icing on the cake.Read more ›

My Favorite Shirt

I liked this shirt so much that I bought a second one; first was white, second was lapis, which most people call light blue. The technical features - sun blocking, air flow, pockets, and quick dry fabric - and fit make it perfect for both vacation and home use. I wear size medium and the Reef Runner is just right for shoulders, sleeve length, and body. (REI has a similarly priced shirt which is almost snug.) By contrast, ExOfficio's Air Strip shirt (received as a gift) is billowy and feels like a stout person's discard, although it has some additional features (hidden side vents, three way (!) button down collar, utility loop)and colors; the fabric also feels different. Both styles are very light weight and ideal for both travel and home.
The Reef Runner would have been the perfect shirt when I hiked from the south rim of the Grand Canyon to spend two nights at the Phantom Ranch. Sun protection is of paramount importance on the trail, and having a fresh shirt a few hours after hand washing is a delight. ExOfficio also makes underwear well suited to such a trip.
To assure complete satisfaction with price, fit, and color, shop the web for similar features in other shirts. This one exactly fit my needs and my body.

With the exception of the zippered pocket...I would prefer a button or Velcro...and the fact that it has some type of webbing that runs along the inside seam of each arm for ventilation I am assuming , I like the look and feel of this shirt. It does a good job of whicking moisture away on hot and humid days and it is easily washed in the sink at night and dry the next day for packing and/or wearing again.

Exactly what it seems, fits a small...

This is the shirt you would wear into the desert. it is very light, quick drying and white. You can wash this shirt in a sink and hang it to dry and it would be ready to wear in no time. It fits a little tight and the arms are a little too short. (XXL on a 6'3" frame). The white did not work for me because I got it too dirty doing water sports, but if you love walking in the heat, this shirt would be perfect.

So-So but better options out there

This shirt is ok, but to be honest I really prefer the columbia brand shirts such as the Columbia Men's Low Drag Offshore Long Sleeve Shirt. My biggest problem with this shirt is if you don't take it out of the dryer immediately it is extremely wrinkled which doesn't happen with the columbia shirts I've bought. Also I prefer the plethora of pockets in the columbia shirts. I do like the ExOfficio underwear and t-shirts so not biased against the company, just think they didn't hit the mark with this one.
