Yes, it is just a piece of rope with a snap on the end. However, we have used many others, including the metal wire ones, and this one just works better. It doesn't tend to get tangled, and it doesn't get hard bends in it like the metal wires. The first one we purchased has been in use for many years, and although it faded from orange to white, it is still going strong. I would recommend.

Thick and strong, this cord works well with my 35 pound dog who must go outside in my rural area. I am disabled and not able to walk him. This cord allows him plenty of room to move about until he is finished, and he comes inside to the back porch when he is ready on his own. He does go to the dog park in town for regular exercise...we are both happy..

A word of caution, nylon rope and a running dog = rope burn. My initial impression of 30 feet was off and I trew the bumper, dog took off and my hand now hurts. I learned that lesson, the next lesson came shortly when my dog circled around like she was picking up a skier and now my leg hurts. I didn't dock a star for that, but I'm just posting to help out others. I did however dock a star because the latch is tiny, like something I would put on a key chain.

I'm a fairly large SportDOG fan and own several of their products. I wasn't expecting to find out they had a check cord available as a product but the other available products kept me looking.

The other leashes were either, overpriced, too short, low quality or a combination of all three.

I just purchased my second SportDOG check cord and both the new one and the old one have held up very well. I found the claim to be knot proof interesting. However, the claim was true in several cases. The cord will pretzel up but the slickness of the nylon and the thickness of the cord makes it fairly hard to have a tight knot. It comes out very quickly and the cord reforms.

I have only used it indoors but I have found no flaws, it is a solid product.

It is bright, lightweight, my little yorkie mix loves it because it moves with him. As for not having a handle... not a problem... one end has a knot and the rope is already sealed. A couple of zip ties and vavoom!! custom sizing !!! I don't know if it is truly going to last a lifetime, but if it doesn't, I will certainly buy this cord before any other kind..

I have an 18 months old Labrador Retriever and I live downtown so until now I have rarely had the opportunity to actually let my dog run free and had to keep him close so he won't jump on people or mouth whatever he found on the ground. I got this check cord because I've tried to let him free a number of times and he totally forgets about me or about the training that he got so far and I wanted something that allowed me to keep him in control should the need arise but still allow him to be a dog and run around.

I previously had a long nylon rope that was about 15 feet long. It was too short, it was thin so it tangled easily and I got rope burns pretty much the second time I used it. This check cord is the right length as my dog doesn't really want to go beyond 30 feet away from me and the rope is thick enough so you can easily handle it even if you forgot to put your gloves on -- which are still recommended.

I initially was worried because of the size of the clip. For a Lab, it seems a bit flimsy and I was worried that he might break it. He did run once away and I had to stop him and the clip seems durable enough however I learned that the point of using a check cord is to actually just stop the dog from doing things that he likes but you don't really enjoy (running and jumping on other folks, running after some dogs, eating some poop) but during the rest of the time your dog should just drag it around. A smaller clip makes the overall footprint a bit smaller and your dog will forget he has a lead sooner, so I'd say that's actually an advantage.

Other than that, there's nothing more that I can say. I can safely let my dog run around, it also helps me with his training in new places and I'm not worried any longer that he might run away for some reason.
