This unit performed as I expected it to. There was another review which laid out much more details; but I will try to do a quick summary of what I learn and what you can expect.

The video quality you capture will be as good as what you send in. So, crap in is crap out. Don't get me wrong, my VCR works great, its just the video quality can not be captured better than what your device sends. That being said, I was impressed by the reproducibility of the video. I found that the DVD setting worked the best for best quality and reasonable file size.

Speaking of file size, what you should expect using the DVD setting is going to be about 2.5 gig per hour. The AVI file gets you double that, but at no extra benefit (in my opinion). Just like converting MP3 files to WMAs. WMA works, but at double the file size at the same quality.

Lastly, make sure your computer can handle it. With regards to capturing the video, my laptop worked just fine. But I am running second gen I5, windows 7, 4 gig RAM. I also am cautious and turn off IMs, make sure virus scan is not doing an active scan, etc. I would caution multitasking while capturing video.

Be prepared to spend some time doing this. If you have 20,000 hrs of video, then expect 20,000 worth of capturing to do.

I do not plan on doing any real amounts of video editing, so I cannot comment on that part. I imagine though the software would work fine for a novice person not doing anything complicated. Again, though, sounds like you need to make sure your computer can handle it as it uses major CPU power.

Also, I plan on keeping my files on my computer, not moving them to DVDs, blu ray, etc; so I cannot comment on that part.

I was looking for a way to capture / digitize our 35 year old VCR tapes (interviews with parents, childrens' weddings, vacations, etc.

I looked at a wide array of similar devices and read most of the comparison reviews on them.

I elected to buy this one because of its physical connectivity: S-video for picture quality, USB for simplicity and because the reviews said it connected easily and worked as promised. Those reviews were spot-on; the device does the job to my satisfaction (although you do have to ensure that you've set the right parameters and elected the best output format in order to get the best quality digital equivalent data file).

I unhesitatingly recommend this product to others. It is neither the cheapest nor the most expensive option available... it is just a really good product at a reasonable price.

The hardware works great. Much better video quality than expected. The software sucks and support in non-existent. I just use other software once the video is captured

Only 4 stars because the directions are ....NONEXISTENT..... I mean, there is a rudimentary....."put your finger in your ear....sound will stop.....pull out finger.....sound starts". I am not kidding. What do these people do for a living??? Comprehensive directions are necessary courtesy to reduce the time wasted by ...US....the customer, learning to operate this.....ABSOLUTELY INFURIATING.

That being said. This little gem is a dream to capture old analog material and digitize it. THE DEVICE WORKS SEAMLESSLY WITH MORE SOPHISTICATED SOFTWARE. I use a high quality Capture/Edit program, and things interlace perfectly.

The included software itself is novice/beginner level,.....BUT.....it has one handy feature that my upgrade software does not have. With the better software, I have to capture and save before I can begin to edit the COLOR/HUE/SATURATION/SHARPNESS/BRIGHTNESS. this is not a problem for a program that is to be chopped and edited. When you have a long tape that would look better a little less red....a little brighter....This software allows you to balance to taste as you record it. ANYWAY, I liked that feature.
This will capture your old VHS tapes and convert them to digital. PLEASE READ THE LENGTHY TUTORIAL/REVIEW THAT HAS BEEN POSTED HERE.....HE KNOWS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT, AND SOME POINTS ARE CRITICAL.You will have no problem gobbling up 20 or 30 GB of space to save a single movie to transfer. You need a dual layer DVD, or Blue Ray burner to get a movie on one disk, a 64 bit system with 8GB of memory is almost mandatory. We are limping along with a 64 bit / 4 GB system....BUT, IT IS LIKE A SNAKE SWALLOWING A FOOTBALL ON OUR 32 BIT SYSTEMS.

We have 500+ VHS tapes, and I am not going to repurchase in DVD....

After reading some of the other reviews I wanted to leave some thoughts of my own for anyone interested in some proper comments from a person with some degree of video editing. Before I get into specifics however, I'd like to say a few words about video and video capture that could very well have been factors with other folks reviews.

The first thing you need to know about working with video on a computer, be it with this product or others, is that video is a resource intensive thing. If you are running an older system and particularly an "off the shelf" computer, such as an HP, Dell or other so-called "name brands", very simply you may have some problems. Please remember that many of these computers are designed for your average brain dead computer user who is typically interested in surfing the internet, playing their mp3's, im'ing, email, watching Youtube, playing games, etc. They are -NOT- professional systems designed for video production!!!! Even when you watch one of these newer animated movies where in the credits you see something like "computers provided by Hewlett Packard", be assured those systems were custom built for their specific function and are NOT the same systems you typically see at Best Buy or Micro Center. In other words, if your system is using a slower hard drive or an older IDE drive (I recommend at least a fast SATA...7200 rpm is a good place to start) or you're trying to do everything from a single hard drive that's loaded with a bunch of crap, your very likely going to have problems.

The second thing is that working with video on a computer is -complicated-. Ok, I can't stress this enough...
