This does what it's supposed to very well. The muting action is stronger than rubber ones. When my daughter uses this in the room upstairs, I can not hear her.

Since one of the reviewers reported that this one didn't fit his bridge, and since I didn't have any idea if this fits to my daughter's violin, probably it would be useful for others to know the following:
If the thickness of the top of your bridge is between 0.088 and 0.045 inches, this will work. The top of your bridge is probably tapered, i.e. it's the thickest on G-side and thins down towards E-side, so make two measurements.

If the thickest part of the top of the bridge is equal to or larger than 0.1 inch, which is extremely thick by the way, it will not fit.

This is because the top of the bridge is very, very gently wedged into the V-slot of the mute by gravity or/and your finger, and the opening of V-slot is about 0.11 inch and the "apex" is about 0.043 inch.

BY the way the top of the bridge should not go all the way down to the "apex" of the V-slot. See my picture.

When my wife and I moved into a smaller house the ability to practice the violin became severally hampered. She may be fond of the instrument, however the same song played four hundred times over and over again can get on just about anyones nerves. Things were getting bad enough that we were seriously considering purchasing an electric violin for practice just so she would not have to listen to everything I played. I had heard of mutes in the past but never considered them a viable option, seemed like their would be no way to mute a violin without interfering without significantly interfering with the tone. I was proven wrong and this little gym works wonders by reducing the vibration of the bridge and making it quite enough that now I only have to be in the next room, not the next house over.

This is a must have for anyone wishing to practice and not interested in letting everyone in the house listen to your pre-performance. Additionally, now that I know how this piece works I would recommend a person choose a heavy metal silencer over the rubber options when looking for extreme muting.

As other reviewers have mentioned, this mute does a far better job than a rubber one. I live in a high rise apartment building and do not wish for my neighbors to be disturbed by my practicing.

Important points:

* When installing, the mute does not go all the way down over the bridge, it perches on top of it. This leads the mute to sit up higher than most others, which can block your view of the strings a bit between the fingerboard and the bridge. More experienced violin players don't really need to see this, but beginners may struggle with correct bow placement until they get used to this.
* Additionally, due to being quite high off the bridge, this would not stay on your violin permanently like a rubber mute would.
* Despite looking large and heavy, I did not feel any extra fatigue while playing or holding up the violin.

Noise level test:

I haven't tested a rubber mute, but here were my results when testing this mute against a cheap noise meter:
* Without the mute, an open A string played as loud as possible would average around 65db and peak around 73db. This would be the equivalent of constant loud conversation going on.
* With the mute, an open A string played as loud as possible would average around 58db with a peak of 61db. This would be the equivalent of having a conversation at a normal volume level.

Note that these tests are unscientific and the noise meter used was just an android app. My opinion is that this mute does reduce the noise coming from the violin down to levels where you shouldn't need a soundproof room to practice without your neighbors easily hearing you, but it will certainly not make your violin anywhere near whisper quiet. It does meet my needs.

I've tried both metal mutes Amazon offers and I like this one the best. It sits a bit lower on my 4/4 than the other one, making it easier to see the end of the fingerboard which my teacher has me doing to keep the bow on "the highway."

She recommends metal mutes for adult beginners for another reason besides late practices. Says they develop better intonation since you have to put more weight on the bow in order to hear the pitch. Adults tend to play too softly even without a mute, partly from embarrassment and partly so as not to disturb others. Kids are less likely to develop that habit, as they like to make noise.

I ordered this after getting another plated brass mute that had awful fit and finish. This one is finished beautifully, the nickel plating is perfect, the fit is very nice, the edges are rounded nicely so that it won't mark your bridge. It mutes it down an incredible amount but preserves enough of the tone so that you can clearly hear mistakes of which I make plenty.

I highly recommend this one.

Works extremely well at dampening the sound without undue pitch distortion. I can practice in the living room in the wee hours of the morning without waking others in the house. It hasn't cured my insomnia, but it has made weathering it more productive. Not sure I'd use this on my expensive instrument very often for fear of wear and tear on the bridge but happily use it on my travel violin with no hesitation (and, honestly, haven't seen any additional wear that instrument's bridge).
