These two little transparent plastic strips are nifty tools to help select the appropriate colors for an art project by determining light and dark values...and the mid-point between. The strips, in both red and green, are of a thick plastic that actually feels heavy like glass. When placed over a subject (artwork, fabric, photo, etc), the strip takes the color out and shows you the values (light to dark). For warm colors, you use the red strip. For cool colors, you use the green.

To use, you hold one of the strips in front of the subject material and view the image through the strip. It sometimes helps to close one eye. Those areas seen through the filter as darkest become those that will stand out the most (darkest) in your final project. Likewise, those areas viewed as being lightest will be the lightest in your finished work. And mid-values...ditto.

I find them helpful when out in the field doing landscape paintings. Usually my eye can pick out the darkest areas, but I've been surprised a couple of times by what the filter showed. If nothing else, it validates the choices you've already made in color value selections.

An artist friend of mine has an old pair of eyeglasses that were fitted with special red acetate lenses that he uses when portrait painting. Yeah, they look goofy, but he doesn't wear them for the entire painting session...just when he needs to identify which areas stand out as the lightest on the model and then reference back to his painting to confirm that those areas are standing out as the lightest in his painting. Until such time as I can find (or make) my own pair of red acetate glasses, I'll be content using these color filters from Cottage Mills.

These value filters are also invaluable for the fabric artist who uses a wide array of colors and fabric types...but needs to be able to identify the same value within each color family.

Absolutely helps you determine the values of colors. Sometimes it is helpful to have close values, sometime not. At any time, this is THE most helpful device.

Being relatively new to quilting, we are learning the ropes. One of these is the ways to put fabric together to achieve the look you desire. The same fabric swatches put together in different ways wind up looking nowhere near alike. What fabric stands out, and what will recede and be complimentary can be difficult to determine. Hard to believe but these two pieces of plastic actually make those decisions more obvious, by eliminating the color and seeing the fabric more along a grey scale. I think theses are a bit pricey, but are easliy transportable to ghe fabric store when you are on the hunt.

Intruiging colored rectangles that help you determine color value, enabling you to finally get going on sorting that enormous box of scraps, fat quarters or charms for that stash quilt you've been putting off. Made of sturdy plastic. One red rectangle and one green come in a plastic clamshell case with very brief instructions that leave much to be desired. Use the red one for warm colors and the green for cool colors. The ones that appear darkest will have the most "pop" in your quilt or artwork,, the ones that appear lightest will be so much background noise. It may help to close one eye when looking through them. Well made, should last indefinitely.
