I bought this because my wife, a nurse, was tired of fussing with our 4 1/2 yr old and our oral thermometers, and wanted something closer to what she uses at work. Our daughter was on the verge of pneumonia, and we knew we would be tracking her temperature regularly for a couple of days, and wanted something to get it done quickly and accurately. This Braun Ear Thermometer does the trick. It's fast, accurate, easy to handle, and well made. Don't waste the extra $20-30 for the next model up in the Braun product line - paying for the "tip warmer" feature is pointless when the reading takes less than 3 seconds to perform. This is a real bargain, IMO.

pros - light weight and small, easy to use, uses 1 AAA battery which is easy to find and replace. design conforms to the hand.

cons - no back light on lcd screen

summary - i prefer this over the thermometer that is used on the forehead. this is almost as accurate as those used in the hospitals. easy to use specially for babies and battery is easy to find and replace. it would have been great if they put a back light on the lcd screen, because if you are a parent like me who monitors my baby's temperature during the night when she is sick, you don't want to be turning on the lights just to see the reading of the thermometer.

Our trusty, reliable, 15 year old Thermoscan stopped working just as my entire house came down with the flu. Too sick to drive, much less drag myself somewhere and start comparing models, I took a chance on this model mainly because the price was right and I could get it quick with one day delivery without leaving the house.

There isn't much to say about the unit - it takes the temp in 1 second, and it works. Every time I took a temperature it took it on the first try - no "error" message, no having to try two or three times. We also have the Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer. Given a choice between the two, I would buy the Thermoscan unit every time. Every time we tried the Exergen unit it would take 7 or 8 tries to get anything but an error message, and if the skin on the forehead is even slightly damp (uh, like when running a high fever), it wouldn't register a temp at all no matter how many times we tried. The Thermoscan worked the first time, every time.

There are only three areas I see that could be improved on this Thermoscan model. 1. The lcd readout screen is not backlit, and does not have a little light like the old models did. So if you are taking a child's temp in the middle of the night, you can't read it in the dark. 2. The "beep" to let you know the temp has registered is too quiet. While it was in my own ear, I could hear it, but when using it on the kids I had to have them tell me when they heard the beep so that I'd know I held the button long enough. By contrast, my 15 year old Thermoscan, and the Exergen temporal thermometer both had a very soft, but audible beep. 3. The unit takes a button cell battery. It comes with the battery installed, but this will be a pain onces the battery runs out, as most people don't keep those in the house.Read more ›

My family has had, and used, a Braun Thermoscan thermometer for years and years without any problems. Since we have two bathrooms, I decided it was time to finally get another one so we'd have a thermometer on each side of our home. The thermometer worked immediately upon receipt and is easy to use. It is easily readable with a fairly large display and does take only a second, just as the description states. The only reason I did not give this thermometer a five-star rating was due to the fact that our old thermometer had a case which allowed the thermometer to be stored as well as a package of the probe covers. This one has a protective cap, but no case, so the covers have to be stored separately. Other than that, I would highly recommend this product.

We have had this thermometer for 10 months now, and it's been the most useless thing we bought for our baby. It has maybe gotten an accurate temperature reading a handful of times, for both the adults and the little ones in the household alike. Most of the time, if the baby had a temperature of 100+, it usually gives us a reading of 94-98. And you can do the exact thing multiple times in a row, with brand new caps, and it STILL will fluctuate by degrees on what temperature you are getting without actually getting anywhere close.

Another thing that I think is a tad annoying is that it will not work without the little covers (which are not exactly cheap themselves). While I think the covers are a great idea, if you are in a jam that little detail is quite irritating. It can be worked around, but it takes a bit of ingenuity on your part.

Overall, I was extremely disappointed with this product. I think it's pretty telling that I would rather go through the extra preparation it takes to stick a thermometer up baby's bum than use this one.

So far used it a few times and is pretty happy with it.

Why I love this:
It works quick. I have a soon to be 1 year old. I think it's pretty obvious that using a regular thermometer wouldn't work. No child likes to sit still and wait for the thermometer to be ready. This is so quick, it really is 1 second! By the time she move her head, it was ready.

What I don't like about this:
It's kind of big. I have a small emergency first aid storage box in the closet which I put must-have medicine and wound care to keep at home. This takes up quite a bit of space. Holding this in my hand, my hand fits comfortably around it and I would say it's kind of still bigger. Also, you have to use a cap to keep it clean. There is a sensor in the middle that needs to be protected or else it would make it an inaccurate reading. It's a sensitive piece so I don't want to risk getting it dirty and attempting to clean it. I wouldn't even try to clean it with a q-tip because it might also ruin it (says the manual). I haven't bought any of them yet, nor have I looked up how much they are. But I assume they are pretty cheap.

Compare to other thermometers:
Paci thermometers (for my daughter): These are actually very inaccurate. I got a scare because of this. I took my daughter to the ER because it read she had a fever of 101 when she was only 2 months old. At the ER she had a regular temp. Never used that paci-thermometer again.

Regular thermometer: These are a lot more affordable. I bought a cheap $2 one from Walgreen because I needed one ASAP for myself. It's simple and it works. Still works now after a year. Pretty surprised lol. These work well for my baby a couple times I took her rectal temp. But, she didn't like it.Read more ›
