I have had great success with the traditional thumball icebreaker. Unfortunately, this is a cheaper version. The traditional ones are the size of a soccer ball that you would catch with two hands (calling out left or right thumb before it's caught). This ball is about the size of a softball, with most people's thumbs sitting across 2 or more questions. The stitching and material also seemed cheap.

Also you should know that this cannot be used for adult groups or work settings. The questions (like how old are you) do not translate well to those settings.

We brought this to a special needs High School class my daughter visits. Not only did the students have fun tossing the ball but the teacher and staff had fun as well. The ball encouraged everyone to engage in an interactive way and the room was full of animated conversation. The students couldn't wait for their turn. We also tossed the ball around at family gatherings and everyone had fun answering questions. I'm always on the lookout for tools that help my daughter interact and engage in "natural" conversations with others and this was right on target. I'd also recommend the un-game.

I have used this in my sessions with 8 - 10 year olds and their families, and it makes for a fun and informative break in session. It's a lot of fun for the kids and everyone a learns a few things about each other. Very useful.

I really like this Thumbball. The material is durable and can easily be wiped down for sanitation purposes. It is a squishy ball that immediately bounced back to its original shape. Some of the conversation starters work for all ages, but some are more geared toward upper elementary-aged student.

I like this ball a lot. I used a thumball in one of the workshops I attended and thought it would be a great first day of school activity. I teach high school, and this ball's topics a great for underclassmen. It allows them to share little bits of information to give them a sense bonding with their classmates.

One thing I do have to say is the 4 inch balls are not really for high school students/adult hands. The squares are smaller and I find older boys tend to have their thumbs in two or three squares. However, almost all girls and most boys are able tell which square they are in.

** On a side note, I do realize that the ball has pentagons and hexagons instead of squares. For high school students, I wouldn't recommend this ball as I find Thumball Ice Breaker 6? a better choice.

I got this for my own family(three children ages 5-8) but I can easily see how it would be great for a group outing with friends or new acquaintances (think summer camp trip or church group). We always do a round robin at the end of the day and sometimes we just run out of ideas. The Thumball is an easy, soft, prompt. Good questions and a few wild cards (e.g. readers choice).
