I'm usually skeptical of "preventive" supplements - how do you know if they actually work? In this case, I do know.

My wife has "idiopathic retinal neovascularization," which is very similar to macular degeneration. While injections of Avastin directly into the eye seem to control it, the condition would flare up every time we spent a lot of time outdoors in the sun, even though she wore her doctor's recommended brand of sunglasses. This would happen every few months, and each time would result in some more retinal scarring and permanent loss of vision.

She's been taking two capsules a day for 9 months now, and has had no new flare-ups. It does seem to really help protect the retina from the light. I only wish we had known about it much earlier, as it might have saved more of her vision.

So far this product has been a good purchase. It is good in that I take it along with the Eye Formula vitamin/mineral product my Opthamologist recommended. I found it the only way to get, economically both of the eye formula mulitvitamin product and this product in the Percentages of each that was recommended.

My 82-year-old father has Macular Degeneration, diagnosed last year. He was quite concerned about his eyesight, and actually started to look at supplements, something he's never believed it. In January 2012, I subscribed him to Source Naturals Zeaxanthin with Lutein. I also got him Carlson Mega Elite Fish Oil Gems, 5 per day. It's now May, and with these two supplements--along with a senior formula multi--he says his eyesight has not gotten worse. We hope with time that his eyesight will actually improve, but for now it has definitely stabilized, which is great news for him.

The dosage of this supplement is very low; 6 milligrams of Lutein, 4 milligrams of Zeaxanthin, and 2 milligrams of vitamin C from Zeaxanthin thrown in for no apparant reason. Not exactly the dose or ratio one would want. The naturally occurring ratio is 5 to 1, Lutein to Zeaxanthin, and these ratios are available in other products in doses of 20-25 milligrams of Lutein with one fifth the amount of Zeaxanthin. I knew none of this when I ordered this product, and so this was a wasted purchase for me. I suggest you do some research and look more critically than I did before you make a decision on what to buy.

It is hard to know when supplements work, but a friend has just been diagnosed with beginning stages of macular and her doctor stated that she would have been worse had she not been taking her supplement for the past few years. So, I will continue to take them, as macular runs in the family.

Zeaxanthin seems to actually be useful (BTW, baseball players are using it also) ... just to note, as of AUGUST 5, 2015 - the active ingredients are: 4 MG Zeaxanthin, 6 MG Lutein and 2 MG Vitamin C ... be sure and check all the Zeaxanthin included - some of the capsules offered (not from Source Naturals) are ridiculously low like 800 MCG (micrograms instead of milligrams - meaning it has like 20% of the Zeaxanthin versus the 4 MG) so be sure and look look closely as many seem to be obscuring the active Zeaxanthin by combining the other possible active ingredients.

Also, these are large gelatin capsules - if you prefer smaller pills, the Swanson Ultra brand is smaller but no Lutein.

I have tried this product a couple of times, because I occasionally have blurred, wavy vision, and, on other occasions, temporary small blind spots.
The product helps, but I have found, comparing a couple of months on this, and a couple of months using Nature's Bounty Full Spectrum Lutein, (which also contains zeaxanthin), that the latter seems more effective. Plus, I can buy it at the local pharmacy. The Source Naturals seems like a worthwhile product, although, like any supplement, you have to take it for a while to see any effect. It's just that for me, the Nature's Bounty supplement seems more effective.

I can tell when I run out of this product and have to go even two or three days without it I can tell immediately. At night, I cannot make out the on-screen TV guide. Almost immediately after resuming my regimen, the screen returns to focus to where I can read it without putting on my glasses. Just that is enough of an improvement for me to continue taking this product.
