We purchased two of these over a year ago and have one in a shower and the other in a bath/shower stall. Both work well for awhile and then when the batteries still have half of their life left, the unit will quit working and you must replace the batteries. I've tested the batteries that I take out and they still show as good, but do not have enough juice left to make this work. There is no warning of low battery power, it just won't turn. It might beep, then nothing happens.

The refills are also way to expensive. About $4 each. We've taken to refilling the bottles with a product called Mist and Go that costs a dollar, from the dollar store, for a spray bottle that almost completely refills the bottles used for this. The caps don't come off easily to refill the bottles either, but with a little force they do eventually come off and can be resealed.

Have decided not to use this product any longer. Tired of paying for new batteries monthly and refill bottles if we don't have the Mist and Go on hand. So we will go back to hand spraying the shower and tub with the Mist and Go following each use.

All I can say is God Bless the man who invented this product! It has truly been a lifesaver in this house. I have two of these things and the amount of time they save scouring out the showers is amazing. We had rust spots on all of the showers, tubs, curtains, you name it, and this stuff solved the problem. No more scrubbing until your arms break off, no more soap scum and no more mildew. Great, great product, as I said, I had one and went out to buy a second. I would have paid more for it - it's really that great of a product and I've been using mine for about a year now. Just have to change the batteries about every 3 months. If you use it daily, you can get a month out of one of the refill bottles. Highly, highly, highly recommend!

I was so excited when the SC Johnson Automatic Shower Cleaner was [constantly] advertised. Would it do what it says?

I bought this over the holidays. Two points stand out quite clearly.

1. It leaks. The fluid doesn't last as long as it should. The leak is slow - drops at a time - but noticeable, and the refills are $4 at the supermarket. Seems that it's expected to leak; there is a suggestion on the package insert to clean the battery connections when changing the batteries. Mine were covered in congealed fluid.

However

2. My tub is clean. I still bleach the tub every week, but all signs of mildew are gone. The shower curtain and shelves are clean.

I'll continue to use it because it makes my life easier, but I am disappointed. You'll notice that the commercials have (March 2009) all but disappeared. I'm assuming that a New and Improved model will be out, but I won't be able to budget a second one.
