This pencil is great. It is a little bit on the lighter side but when compared to other pencils it actually weighs a bit more than most. It fits nicely in the hand and has a great spring to it. Meaning if you push down a little harder while writing the tip is spring loaded and will compress a bit.

Now I find myself a bit of a perfectionist, so here are the things that bother me. It has a triangular grip, meaning that the clip will be up only in one writing position. Which wouldn't be a problem but the lead doesn't rotate so as soon as the lead gets a bit dull you have to rotate the pencil. Thus putting the clip in a bit of an awkward position against your hand. Secondly the finishing isn't that great. In the open space "under" the clip the surface is a lot smoother than the rest of the body(I never clip my pencil onto anything so it isn't from wear). The body of the pencil appears to be made in two halves that stretch the length of the pencil. They aren't exactly lined up so there is an "edge" on both sides.

On a side note I wish Lamy made a .3 in the safari or al star.

It's quite expensive for a mechanical pencil, but it matches my fountain pen. It's also a bit bigger than a "regular" mechanical pencil. I imagine it would be pretty hard to break it (except the .5mm graphite); the clip is also sturdily attached. All in all, it works. It's just a pencil.

This is a very nice mechanical pencil. It's part of the Lamy Safari line, so its style matches the fountain pen and ballpoint pen.

It works smoothly and so far, I haven't had any lead break apart inside the pencil and jam it up. One very good design feature is the pocket clip. It's a heavy chrome-plated wire that really holds the pencil in place in a pocket. I think I could do a head stand and not have it fall out. It also is big enough that the pencil won't roll off of a desk, which is nearly a guarantee of lead break-up and jamming.

The one bad thing about this pencil is the eraser. It's accessible by pulling off the little cap on the clicking button. It works fine, but it's actually part of an assembly that consists of the eraser, a little plastic holder, and a pin to clear out jams. They work great, but they cost nearly $8 for a set of three. Yikes! So far, I haven't found them any cheaper than that.

Bottom line: A very nice pencil in the Lamy Safari line.

My collection of fountain pens now includes about ten, from the Mont Blanc to the more modest Lamy and all manner in-between. My duty day has me wearing the Army uniform all day long. Since a pen is "part of the uniform," the Lamy Safari fountain pen in charcoal comes with me. The mechanical pencil is needed for note-taking, but using the whisker of an eraser wouldn't be practical, so I keep a black eraser pen on hand. Three pens and three pockets on the uniform sleeve make this math pretty easy. Some reviews are touting "tactical pens" or whatever. Honestly? You're going into a bad situation trusting your very pulse to a PEN? Trying to recommend a "pen weapon" to operators in the tactical field is absurd, though it does have its usefulness as a tool or a really, really durable pen. A Winchester folding-blade knife is always with me with a well-honed edge, as is my cellphone (the latter is arguably the best weapon out there). The Safari line is TOUGH and doesn't mind a little weather. The Cross and the Waterman are too pretty; leave them in your study. If your fieldwork actually has you in the field, take the Lamy Safari.

A little too light weight of a pencil for my preference. My last mechanical is the Pentel Kerry drafting pencil that I love. I've had it for 4 or 5 years now. It's a great look and functions great. I lost my eraser cap a month or so ago while sketching a transformer foot-print for a customer. I forgot to replace it and it blew away somewhere. I got a Lamy Econ Stainless from Massdrop a day or so after this Safari came in. It is pretty hefty and feels like it could last me as long as that Pentel.

I love these pencils and have a few of them. Eventually, the little black ring came off and got lost. I'm still not sure why it was there in the first place. For an expensive pencil, the seam where the two halves of the body are joined should be smoother.

If you want a quality day to day fountain pen and ink, you owe it to yourself to check Lamy. I have several of their products and ink. The ink cartridges last forever! Then pens look elegant yet can take the day to day use without having to worry about damaging them.

This is my second pencil. The first one was stollen. For that first one I give five stars. This second one came with an eraser cap that didn't fit perfectly. It's a bit loose, so I had to fix it since I'm froom Chile and returning it is a headache. So I gave now 4 stars.
