I've noticed a lot of people reporting various problems with this product on the internet and, from what I can tell, most of the time it's because of incorrect application or installation on the part of the user. I've installed this product on 6 different motherboards with 4 different types of SATA hard drives and have had no difficulties with any of them.

First, this device is meant to allow someone to connect 1 or 2 SATA drives to a dual IDE port on the motherboard. Not the reverse.

Second, if you are installing only 1 SATA drive, it must be connected to the first SATA connector, (the one on the opposite side of the board from the SP4 power connector). If you're installing 2 SATA drives, then this port is the Master and the SATA port in the middle is the Slave.

Third, this unit requires its own power. The LP4 to SP4 power adapter supplied with the unit must be plugged into the SP4 power connection on the unit and an available LP4 power connection from the power supply. This connector isn't meant to power the SATA drives. They must have their own power connection from the power supply.

Fourth, if you happen to have one of the older units, the jumper on it was never implemented (per StarTech). It does nothing. The newer units don't even have the jumper pins mounted on the unit.

Lastly, some older motherboards require the SATA hard drive be limited to 1.5 Gb/s speed in order to "sense" the drive depending on the model of the drive. This can be done with a jumper setting that can be looked up on the manufacturer's website of whatever model SATA drive is being used.

Hopefully this will help some people out with problems they're having with this product.

I bought this little gadget to convert the integrated IDE (PATA) controller on an old Dell PowerEdge 1600SC. I have had it in the system for a few weeks now, and it is running well. I have not experienced any reboots that did not recognized the attached devices.

Things to remember:
1. Be sure to seed the controller correctly. I recommend holding the card by the side as you push it into the IDE controller port. If you do not have it fully set right, your system may not see it.

1.1. If the controller is integrated onto the motherboard, you may need to disconnect any surrounding cables first. Otherwise, depending on the layout of your system, it may be difficult to get the card seeded correctly.

2. The one I received included a MOLEX cable to power it. This was great for me, as my box has Molex as the default, and so I did not have to give up a SATA power.

3. It is not intended to give you full SATA-2 speeds, I think it is closer to SATA-1

Despite having Flash card readers and the portability of SD-memory cards to transfer files between our computers, I still prefer having backups of files on DVD format. Being a slower method of data transfer, I'm nevertheless satisfied with the transfer rate of IDE cable DVD RAM. The main board I've installed this on only has 2 SATA ports, and most of the DVD drives available are also SATA connections. This adapter works fine. No lag time with videos or with PC game content noticeable.

This device converts a single IDE port to a pair of SATA ports.

Not really functional or price effective. I bought it to adapt IDE DVD players to SATA, but I can buy the drives outright nearly as cheaply. Also, it didn't really work. I may try it again on another computer. Wouldn't buy another one.

This is installed in an older Dell Dimension XPS Gen 2. This adapter works great for my application, primarily to increase SATA port capacity in an older computer. The adapter works with either one or two HDD ---- but it is important to connect the HDD correctly to the adapter. The first SATA port is on the opposite end from the power connector of the IDE to SATA Adapter Converter, the second port is on the opposite side of the card from the power connector.

This was a bit of a challenge to install, as it required a separate power cable. My mother board had none, but eventually I was able to make it work. I got a very old hard-drive installed in a newer PC and was able to pull all the data on it and get a little bit of extra storage for a small price.
