I used this to transfer all of my files from my old PC to a new laptop (XP to Windows 7). The problem came in getting the transfer to start; neither computer could "decide" which one needed to be connected first, so there was a little crapshoot there. Once the transfer began, I didn't have to do anything - but it did take nearly 8 hours. The biggest downfall, besides the time of the transfer, is that you can't do anything on either system while this is in progress. My suggestion? Do it before you head to bed.

This transfer cable is sure faster than using your home network, but I found it missed transferring a bunch of my files. Not sure why, as there was nothing special about them and they were in folders where the other stuff got transferred just fine. So I had to go back and do some of the transferring by hand. A real pain.

After I purchased a new computer, I was going to have to transfer my files by using flash drives, etc. which would have taken me at least a couple of long sessions.
