I usually buy Nature's Recipe Canned Dog Food for Adult Dog, Easy to Digest Lamb Rice and Barley Recipe, 13.2 Ounce Cans, 12 Count but it's been on backorder here on Amazon for over a month now. I went looking for another lamb and rice replacement I could use until my usual brand was back in stock and that's when I came across this Eukanuba.

My dog seem to like this a lot and at this writing I acknowledge this may just be because it's different than what he's been having. I've tried several canned brands/varieties lately and from the first whiff of this he seemed excited. In fact, every pet in the house was interested including a big male cat that actually tried to chase the dog away from his bowl (I am sure going to miss that cat). :-)

Now here's the crazy part. I ordered this here on Amazon March 1, 2016 and the price was listed at a case (12 cans) for $1.99. Shipping was listed at $5.99. I ordered two cases and this was my total:

Total before tax: $9.97

I think someone must have figured out this was listed incorrectly because I was sent just one case, was told there was no more in stock, and received a refund of half my purchase. $5.00 for a case of 12, shipping included, is still an amazing deal and I wish I could have gotten both cases. At the date of this review the price is now listed as a case of 12 for $24.99 + $13.46 shipping.

I always try to include the lot information from pet food I buy here on Amazon and this is what shows on the bottom of the cans I received:

Final thought - when he eats this he has really, really bad breath. It seems worse than when he eats other brands of lamb and rice wet food.

Eukanuba's canned dog food is a middling product. It has strong assets and strong weaknesses for pet owners and their dogs. I know I should go by my own criteria, but it always helps to check out a website I will thinly disguise by calling it "The Dog Food Expert". (Amazon sagely and understandably does not want references or links to other web pages, and I am too happy to respectfully comply.) Having stated that I feel educated enough to know that this product has suspect ingredients. There are by-products and wheat gluten, yet it is fortified by vitamins and minerals and has admirable ingredients, too, like peas, flaxseed meal, and omega-6 fatty acids. The aforementioned online source has this product at a measly two out of five stars [2 *'s out of 5 *'s] in their rating system. They are very knowledgeable, but they are also too persnickety. (None of their Purina products get anything above 2 *'s)

Overall, I think Eukanuba's brand of canned dog food is a mixed bag on nutrition and is too pricey for what it offers. You can do much better with other competitors for both nutrition and value. I bump up the rating to 3 *'s for two reasons: I think as nutritional food, it deserves a better rating, and I can't forget how much my dog loves to eat it. 'Nough said. ;>)

I have always heard that Eukanuba is a great dog food brand. We have never tried it before. Our chihuahua is very picky and will not eat just any brand. He loves this Eukanuba stew with beef and vegetables and scarfs it as soon as it is served. He definitely gives it 5 stars. These large cans are two servings for him (he is a large 15 lb chihuahua with an appetite..we could probably even get three servings a can). I normally just cover the top with saran wrap and a rubberband and place the leftovers in the fridge until his next meal time. He has had a tiny bit of digestive issues switching over to Eukanuba, but I think that is typical of any new food.

The food looks pretty good. It does not look like human food, but it doesn't look like disgusting pate either. It has a lot of gravy which the pup really loves. I will say the vegetables are not noticeable. This is probably a good thing with my picky pup. This food is more expensive than his current food, so I am not sure if we will switch over completely. However, we are definitely considering it.

We buy another brand of lamb and rice wet food for our dogs called Sunday Brunch. Unfortunately, Amazon ran out. So, we tried this and it is as good or better in some ways than the other brand and cheaper. The 4 dogs we have never missed a beat over it. We mix about half a tablespoon with each dog's dry chow of lamb, rice, and veggies. There is a caveat to this brand in that it has wheat gluten in it and the other brand we use doesn't. Now, the other brand is back in stock so I ordered it over this again as it's not that much more expensive for Sunday Brunch... However, this is a great backup and we will fall back on it anytime the other isn't available.

Sunday Brunch is out of stock, so we switched to this brand. The 4 dogs don't seem to mind and they like having a little wet food mixed in the dry chow to give it more flavor and soften it up a little. This is fairly priced and I don't hesitate to recommend using it. We've been using
Home style Recipes, Sunday Brunch with Lamb, 12/12.75-Ounce Cans, Natural Dog Food by Variety. But, like I said, it's out of stock.
