Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

A hit with European moviegoers in 2007, the Norwegian horror film Cold Prey is a modestly successful tribute to Stateside slasher films of the '80s and early '90s. The film's core premise follows the tried-and-true tenets of the genre--a gaggle of young and attractive people are waylaid at a remote location, which turns out to be the lair of a homicidal maniac who dispatches them with ruthless precision--but Cold Prey benefits greatly from director Roar Uthaug's muscular direction, as well as its central location, a remote and snowbound lodge. It also benefits from an emphasis on suspense and atmosphere over gory carnage (though there's a sufficient amount of the latter), and actress Ingrid Bolso Berdal makes for an appealing and resourceful lead. Longtime slasher aficionados will probably predict the final outcome long before it occurs, but the film remains a refreshingly retro alternative to the dour spate of torture-heavy features dominating horror in recent years. The subtitled DVD includes several making-of featurettes, as well as an animatic for an alternate ending and an amusing pair of Uthag's short films, including a faux exploitation trailer. --Paul Gaita

Product Description

Five teenage snowboarders are forced to spend the night in a mysteriously abandoned ski lodge. Except somebody – or something – already lives there. It is huge, savage and unstoppable…and now it’s pissed off.  But if you think this is going to be the usual ‘trapped teens stalked by a maniac’ movie, you’re dead wrong: From the first chilling kill to the final horrific twist, prepare yourself for the smart, intense and award-winning European sensation that has terrified audiences around the world and put the edge back into the body-count genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Honestly, Really Good, May 4, 2009
I popped this one in not expecting much. More straight to video drek from Starz I thought, formerly known as the once great Anchor Bay. I watched not expecting much, & to my suprise, it just kept getting better & better. This one really & truely is worth watching. This is slasher the way it used to be done... the way that it should be done. Now a quick warning for that certain few that can't get into subtitled films. This is in fact a foreign film & is in fact in a different language. The acting is great, the suspense, the horror, the villain, the blood & guts all done top notch, hats off to the makers of this film. This is a truely spooky flick that has you at the edge of your seat, well worth at least a rental, I was certainly impressed, & I think you will be too. Definately check this one out!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars More like 3 1/2 stars... good flick, though, November 1, 2009
This film has been called the perfect slasher film among other things. Eh. Not really. It is a good movie, don't get me wrong. You will surely enjoy it if you like the slasher genre. What I find refreshing about this particular film is how it bucks contemporary conventions by not trying to out-gore or out-sex other slasher films. Another thing that is good about this fiml is that you can actually like the characters. In so many slasher films the viewer cannot wait for everyone to get killed off because they are such terrible characters. Here you actually want them to survive. Also, all this you hear about the "twist ending," don't sweat over it. You know what it is right away. 3 1/2 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Snow Will Run Red, September 10, 2009
By Brian Lueth "WildsideCinema.com" (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
Cold Prey is a solid slasher film, it's beautiful to look at, the atmosphere is thick with isolation and dread and the antagonist is all kinds of cool but its way more than just a stretch to insist this is a perfect slasher movie. I know...I know...viewing experiences may vary and entertainment is subjective but c'mon...perfect? Ever made? Ugh.

Cold Prey has all the right ingredients for one heck of a good time; the characters were all likable (though flat in my opinion), the almost-nudity was appealing, the kills disturbing and the slasher visually impressive. I can't honestly say I was at all surprised by the "big reveal" that we're so used to seeing in these types of films, I had it pegged in a very short time, but that doesn't mean it won't work for some of you. There are some exceptionally cool kill sequences along the way and dropping all of this mayhem in the middle of nowhere while dumping snow on it all just makes the tension that much harder to bear.

As far as Norwegian horror goes, this is a pretty good genre entry and I can see myself checking out the sequel, yeah there's a sequel, but I won't be going out of my way to do so. I just wasn't flattened by Cold Prey. Good flick, not great, not perfect, not even close. I'd highly recommend this to slasher film fans looking for high quality thrills though.
