While I like the dowel system the very first hole I drilled the custom drill bit snapped where it meets the shank and the fluted section remained embedded in the wood. I now very carefully reverse the drill out. I think the temper may have been too brittle. I bought a spare bit so I can finish jobs if it happens again.

Great little tool

The Miller system makes it really easy to place dowels to reinforce or decorate joints. This is the smaller version, great for larger boxes and small tables. A couple of hints: only put glue on the ridged part, as they suggest, and they are easier to drive cleanly. Second, when trimming them flush, put a piece of hook and loop sanding disc grit side up over the dowel (with the dowel through a hole) and saw them off. This will protect the work.

Very handy and pretty easy to use.

The whole Miller dowel thing is a very cool idea. Makes doweling very easy. Miller dowels slide into the dowel holes very easily without the need for hammering and potentially spreading the dowel. Dowels look way more professional and generally hold better than nails or brads. I will use dowel's much more often now that I have this Miller dowel kit. The actual dowels themselves are a bit expensive compared to other fasteners though. If you haven't worked with dowels before I also suggest that you buy a dovetail saw (or some other saw with teeth on only one face of the blade) as after you install the dowel you will need to trim and sand it. A chisel risks ripping a chunk out of the dowel below the work surface and sanding is slow. A dovetail saw can cut off the dowel without damaging the surface and thereby reduces sanding time significantly. Also without a drill press or a guide the bit can wander quite a bit. If you using a portable hand drill piloting with a small bit would probably help a lot.
