This was my first foray into DMX lighting using a computer, so there was some apprehension, but the interface worked right out of the box. In just a few minutes, it was up and running with some rudimentary control of simple dimmer packs. The software that is supplied by the manufacturer is very basic, but a link on the mfg website points toward Freestyler, which is a much more powerful (free) software that supports this interface. Have not used the manual test mode as I had no use for it. The manual states that a USB hub is needed if you use a terminator on the end of the DMX line. I have ~200 ft of DMX cabling with a terminator and did not need a USB hub, but YMMV. Would be 5 stars if the software were better (and better documented...)

I wrote an applications to control my lights and got this to act as a controller for it; it has worked beautifully, and the the API is brilliantly simple to develop against. If you're working with home automation or anything with a custom application integrating with DMX, I'd definitely recommend this.

Plug this into your laptop, get a copy of Freestyler, and suddenly complex DMX commands get easy. Did a fund raiser at a local theater with this setup. Worked great. I've spent a fair amount of time fiddling with a $300 DMX board, and this was WAaayy easier. Strongly recommended.

This is a great DMX control. works great with Freestyler, no drivers required. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is the button for the DMX test is extremely sensitive. If you put the battery in it and want to use it to test you need to make sure that is it not left near anything that will tap the push button. Mine got hit as it was in a bag and I had to replace the battery after it died on me... Other then that the product is GREAT!!!! Much better then the cheep cable ones.

While the unit does control DMX lighting through it's PC software, it does not work with many other DMX512 programs. The software that comes with it is rather unimpressive and is clunky at best. Also, it does not include a working Windows 7 64bit dll's (Dynamic Linked Library). I contacted Velleman's Ft. Worth offices and inquired about such programs as QLC+ and they conceded that they were not familiar with most of these programs. Now while, they did release a 64bit dll on their website, I was unable to get it to work with QLC+ and others.

There is no API provided with this product. The maker provides an SDK that includes some Windows DLLs without any description of the protocol used. Thus users are limited to accessing the device through the furnished DLL.

Crashes Linux Ubuntu 14 on plug. Had to install Ubuntu 7. Not easy to program. Had issues data to it above channel 30 and the data it did send was delayed and slow to process. Went with an Arduino + DMX board instead.

I'm one of the authors of the Open Lighting Project, and I wrote the linux driver for this interface, so I have a pretty good understanding of how the Velleman device works.

With that said, do not use this device under any circumstance! The protocol used to communicate between the PC and the device is poorly designed, which means you can only send around 800 bytes per second. To run 'normal' DMX at 40 frames / second, you need 20000 bytes per second. This means it's really only useful if you have a very small number of channels or are willing to live with choppy fades / movement in the fixtures.

If you aren't convinced, search the Open Lighting mailing lists and you can see all the posts of people having trouble with the Interface. There are better interfaces out there that cost less than the Velleman.
