So I found Sympathy on Metal Archives (I'm just sayin') and downloaded their first two albums -then found this, the third release so far, in physical form on Amazon and ordered it. This album marks a drastic step up (from two solid albums) as they have a real drummer AND Jeff Lewis (one of my new favorite death metal guitarists) joins them for this release.

First off -I love the sound on this album: very heavy but melodic without the melo-death stigma. The guitar tone is very reminiscent of a 90's style sound -thick & meaty. The solos are fantastic (it's Jeff Lewis, come on!), the bass is there, not the front runner in the production but it offers it's presence without getting in the way. If anything, I bought this album because of Jeff Lewis and the (again) amazing guitar work.

Drummer Jim Austin from Into Eternity pilots the kit and he knocks it outta the park! Nothing robotic, good blasting but you can tell a human played (the drumming on the first two albums was programmed as they were on Jeff's solo outing: Abolishment of Hate -also excellent). I'm sure we could nit-pick but I'm not gonna -his playing fits the bill and covers what needs to be done on this album -excellent.

Love the vocals -all around nicely done. No 'core screams or crappy "singing" -pure death metal vocals here. I highly recommend you stop reading this review and find a copy here on Amazon... -well, whatya waiting for?! GO ON, GET IT!

I've been following this band for a little bit and was really encouraged by the clips I heard on the band's MySpace page that this was going to be a good album. After a lot of searching and waiting I wasn't disappointed at all when I finally got my hands on a copy of the full CD.

The first thing that stands out from Sympathy's previous CDs is the recording quality finally does their playing ability justice. The guitars are clear, the bass sits in the right place to fill out the sound and the drums are bright. The vocals are layered in some places and are a little back in the mix, but this isn't uncommon in death metal.

The next big thing is the playing. In this small three piece two of the members wear a lot of hats trading off vocals, bass, and lead work. This doesn't hurt the writing or the performance. The drums are inventive and top notch. Sympathy's style on this album is reminiscent of earlier Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation with a little Morbid Angel thrown in during the leads. It's quick, technical and percussive.

The last thing that impresses me about this album is how good it is without any major label support. Its a real testament to how good music comes from good musicians, not record labels, producers, or expensive studios. If music is well done it will stand out regardless.

Pros:
They finally got it right! The playing and recording are what they should be so the listener can enjoy the experience completely.

Cons:
Impossible to find. The lack of a major label or distributor makes this little gold nugget a tough one to find. You're going to have to go outside the mainstream marketplaces to get any of Sympathy's CDs; and I totally hope you do.

Bottom Line: Full Metal Awesomeness

Great album from Sympathy. At this stage they have pretty much gone balls out death metal. Dharok was wise to bring in Jeff Lewis and Jim Austin, both have greatly added to the music. Jeff Lewis plays some nice leads and wrote some great songs while Jim Austin drums like a madman where as he seemed more controlled in his former band Into Eternity. However for the record I like older Into Eternity. I guess if I had to make a comparison I would say similar to Suffocation in alot of aspects, although they have many of their own elements. And they are lyrically unique, the lyrics are cultivating and thought provoking. For those willing to look outside the box of top 20 death metal bands, this band is worth looking into. They keep getting better and more brutal every album.

Extreme blackened death metal from Canada has once again released a strong release of punishing brutal music. If you are a person of faith, like me, but prefer your music to be extreme without the anti Christian blasphemy, this is it.

Sympathy is a band that never dissapoint. Each album keeps getting heavier and faster. This album is awesome! If you like lots of brutal blast beats, and shredding guitar then you should love this!!!!!!! The only album that shreds more is the Abysal Throne by Sympathy.
