I own a similar product by syba (not listed on amazon). For $20 the syba card i have allowed my 6 year old motherboard to utilize 2 sata hard drives and upgrade from a 40GB and 80GB WD PATA drive to 2 640GB WD SATA drives.

Painless installation, hardest part was I bought OEM drives and one was DOA.

Oh, many sites will warn you that syba makes fake raid cards but if you are looking for a quick way to upgrade an old computer for cheap, Syba is effective.

Some cards twice this amount (actually $50-60 range) will allow you to use a raid configuration but will not give your computer the ability to use SATA if it doesn't already have it.

Oh best part, the hard drives i bought didnt come with sata cables but the controller card came with 2 so i didnt have to pick any other cables up.

I bought this adapter after having some trouble with a quad-port Rosewill card. I needed an eSATA adapter for use with a Startech Dual eSATA Dock (SATADOCK22UE). This is in a c.2003 IBM NetVista desktop with no native SATA ports that is now being used as a SOHO server running stock Debian 5.0 (Lenny). After the Rosewill card had PCI bus conflicts that were not resolvable with BIOS changes, I was a little worried about spending more money on a high-end card for this old machine. The SiI 3512 chip appeared to have a reasonable reputation for Linux support and for less than twenty bucks, this Syba SD-SATA-1E1I card seemed like a cheap bet. After the first one installed well, I bought a second adapter to connect to the second port on the external dock. There were no problems putting two of these cards in this machine. Due to my desire to keep OS and data separate on this server, I am continuing to boot off of a PATA drive connected to the mainboard and have not tested whether these cards handle boot drives well.

As far as hotswapping when using the eSATA dock, my method has been to do the actual drive insertions and removals with the dock port powered off. Since the Startech dock has physical power switches, I have not tempted fate by testing true hotswap with live ports. I also manually spin the drives down (i.e. 'sdparm -C stop /dev/whatever') before power off to avoid unnecessary emergency head retracts. In all cases the stock Lenny kernel has detected everything correctly and added and removed the device files exactly as expected on power-up and power-down.Read more ›

Tired of that slow usb connection warning each time you plug in your external hard drive? Legacy systems usually have usb1, upgrade to faster usb2 just by inserting this card into an open pci slot. XP installs it automatically without additional drivers. I searched all over the web and as usual the best price on was here for $7.

Finally got this card working after struggling for days with it.

A few tips for anyone that buys this card, to help out...

1. the Silicon Image Windows Flash update program doesn't recognize the SiI3512 chip so you have to update the BIOS off a Floppy disk (boot to DOS and then run the DOS based flash updater). I contacted Silicon Image support but they were no help for this problem.

If you don't have a working floppy drive & diskette, you are out of luck to flash the card's BIOS. Unless you can think of another way, such as USB stick. Note: I had to use FreeDOS to make a bootable floppy.

2. their RAID BIOS (factory shipped) didn't allow my drive to boot into Windows. Gave a disk error. I flashed the latest non-RAID BIOS (from Silicon Image) and then it worked perfectly.

Overall this card was very low cost and works good, but gave me a few headaches to make it work.

Bought this to use my Madcatz PS3 Tournament Edition Arcade Stick on my PC. The PS3 fightstick didn't work on my PC, and after some research I found that it is picky in what motherboard it wants to work on. After some digging around the internet I had discovered that some people claim an internal USB card with a VIA chip can fix this. So for $3 I figured why not, I'll give it a shot. Works flawlessly! I'm now using my PS3 stick on PC SSFIV AE 2012 with no issues whatsoever.

If anyone else is having this particular issue I suggest buying this, it's cheap and it works.

Edit: Broke with just regular use. Stopped detecting anything plugged into it. I'll be spending a bit more cash on my next USB card, a shame, worked great with Street Fighter while it lasted. But I can't in good conscience leave this as a 5 star review when it broke so quickly.

I got this card and tried to install it to my workstation today.

Reading the manual is scary since it says the drivers only support Windows XP/NT, not mentioning Windows 7 at all.
However, exploring the Driver CD does reveal that Windows 7 driver is available and I am able to install it.

After plugin everything, I could not find the external SATA drive. I thought I got a lemon and wanted to return it.
But I somehow decided to see if it was the cable's problem. eSATA cable is notoriously stiff to me.

After careful examination, it turns out this card's single port is NOT positioned in the middle of the openning of the card. The port is biased to one side heavily. So my eSATA cable's male end cannot go all the way into the slot since it get stopped by my computer case's IO panel.

Having figuring out the cause, I unscrewed the screws and inserted some padding so the eSATA port now is positioned in the middle. With the Cable plugged all the way into the slot, it works fine.

To manufacturer: please make sure your port is positioned in the middle!!
