Just because we have a LitterMaid cat pan it doesn't mean we have to use the LitterMaid litter. I mean - cat litter is cat litter - the only difference is either it clumps or it doesn't. Right? At least that is what I always thought!

We have had a LitterMaid cat box for 3 years. About 3 months ago our first one died. Much sooner than we had expected, but not a bad life span. Because the old one was getting full every week we decided to get the biggest one we could find. (Note: we have 1 cat)

The new one is a little bigger, but not by much. What has been different this time is the litter. We got the official LitterMaid brand at the same time. WOW - It is a huge difference. Instead of filling the pan every week - it now lasts over a month. Instead of changing the receptacle weekly - it too is lasting closer to two months.

Yes, this litter is much more expensive - however when you look at the actual usage it more than makes up for it. I am expecting a better lifespan for the LitterMaid too.

Littermaid Premium Clumping Cat Litter This litter clumps best of all popular name brand litters, & the smell is certainly kept down to nothing. One part of the test I cannot attest to completely, is the control of bowel movement odor over LONG periods of time. Patches saw that this litter looked & smelled WAY different from regular brands of clumping cat litter, & would only urinate in the Littermaid. She would go to a corner in the bathroom & have her bowel movements there. I dipped it up & put it in the Littermaid & let her smell it there. Still she went to the bathroom corner. I might add, that Patches has NEVER in the 6 years of her life, (nor the cat I had before her who lived 20 years, & used a Littermaid Litterbox), but neither, has NEVER NOT used the litterbox UNTIL, I introduced the "Littermaid Brand Litter" to her. I even tried mixing the "Fresh Step" with the "Littermaid Litter", or putting "Fresh Step" on top of the "Littermaid Brand Litter", but she would still only urinate in the Littermaid box. My vet suggested returning to the Fresh Step Cat Litter that Patches has been used to. I did, & she now does all of her business in the Littermaid Box. I found that "Fresh Step" has a "Regular Scoopable Litter", & a "Premium Scoopable Litter-WITH-Extreme Odor Control." The Premium works EXCELLENT, as opposed to the regular scoopable, of the same brand. So we are stuck on "Fresh Step Premium Scoopable Litter"! Odor is gone. Patches is doing her business where it belongs, & the rake works thru the litter, scooping up the clumps just fine. Even Bowel Movement odor is not smelled anymore.Read more ›

I'm surprised with the reviews stating this works well with the Littermaid machine.
I tried this with my Littermaid Elite Mega model and it was a total disappointment.

For starters, the litter didn't clump very well. When the machine tried to rake the waste into the receptacle, it just ended up dispersing partially clumped pieces everywhere. My cat(s) didn't seem to mind or notice the litter at all, but I could tell a difference in the litter's ability to hold odor and clump.

After going through this bag, a friend suggested I try Swheat Scoop Multi Cat Natural Wheat Cat Litter. I haven't gone back since. I also started sprinkling the bottom of the pan with Tidy Cats Litter Box Deodorizer or ARM & Hammer Cat Litter Deodorizer prior to adding the litter. The Swheat Scoop readily clumps and the machine handles the clumps without bogging down. With the Littermaid, I was very surprised at how poorly it performed, and it put an enormous strain on the very weak motor in the Littermaid machine.

I can not recommend the Littermaid Premium Clumping Cat Litter to anyone. It doesn't seem designed to work well with the Littermaid machine. It is a poor performer when it comes to odor retention and clumping.

I had purchased the Littermaid automatic litter box doodah X2000 (That is not a real model, I forget the real model I had purchased so for the sake of the review just bare with me). The automatic box does exactly what it is supposed to and I have been very pleased with it. The litter they recommend on the other hand, not so much. I find that the litter tends to clump too much and quite often I will be going out for another bag of the stuff within a few days time. On top of that, this cat litter smells well, odd. It's almost as bad as the stench you get right after your lovely fluffy feline spends a few minutes grinning in the litter box. (PLEASE FOR HEALTH REASONS DO NOT SNIFF THE CAT LITTER, IT SIMPLY WAS AN OBSERVATION ON MY PART!!) I will say one thing is that the litter does do what it says it says it is designed for, it clumps up and makes dealing with cat litter a little bit easier. However, instead of spending the $14 or so every other week go to your nearest Costco and purchase there big bag of Scoop Away, the litter is just as fine grained as the Littermaid brand and its financially more efficient as well as it working a little better.
