1. Crate SelectionCrates come in single-door and double-door varieties. For most purposes, an air-ventilated wire crate, which allows your dog to see his surroundings, is the best choice. It can be covered if there’s something going on you don’t want him to see. There should be enough room in the crate for him to turn around and lie down with his paws outstretched. |
2. Placement and SetupPlace the crate in a quiet but not isolated area of the house. You want your dog to have positive associations for his new den, which won’t happen if it makes him feel lonely. The kitchen or corner of the family room is ideal, away from drafts and direct sunlight. The crate should feel like home, not a place of banishment, so the crate should contain familiar bedding and a favorite chew toy. |
3. Open HouseTo get your dog used to the crate, place a chew toy or treat inside. Our sister company, Nylabone, manufactures chew toys and edible chews that are perfect for your dog’s crate time. If he enters the crate, praise him. Do not shut the door. Stay with him. Before you know it, your dog will regard his crate as his own special getaway. Never use force to crate train your dog. 4. Settling DownOnce your dog gets accustomed to the crate, you can begin shutting the door for very brief periods, gradually increasing them over time. Soon your dog will be able to sleep all night in his crate or spend time there during the day. It is very important to ensure that he is not left in the crate for long periods. I was disapointed in the gate, by the time we tightened gate in place, in bowed in the middle (middle is not stable enough to take pressure)... soon it fell over, and we finally had to add a board to stablize it, we ducktaped the board on across the bottom, and we were able to keep it from bowing.
I would spend more money, and get a better gate.
