I use these bottles to contain individual servings of baby formula for traveling and they are the perfect size. However, they are a total ripoff on Amazon...you can get them for much, much less at the Container store.

I selected the wide-mouth type of bottles because I thought they would be easier to deal with when filling or emptying (and, yes, I do have kitchen funnels, but I also use some super-thick liquids like moisturizing hair conditioner). They ARE easy to fill, and I like Nalgene because there is no plastic taste whatsoever. On the particular trip for which I purchased the bottles, I only used ONE. It leaked on our three air flights, but was fine in ground travel. I used it for an antibacterial dental rinse, which is essentially like water - very liquid. Fortunately I have gotten in the habit of putting all liquid travel bottles in zipper plastic bags, and rolling the tops over a few times, so none of my clothes or electronics were damaged(I forget other types of bottles I put in that baggie, but those did not leak; they may have been some aluminum bottles I've had for a couple of decades. Carrying the 4-ounce bottles on board is not an option, since they are more than the 3-ounce limit - and I already have to have my laptop, camera, toothbrush, medicine collection, and all the other stuff you're advised to carry with you instead of checking it.

**It appears as though since I have written this review, they have removed the loop that attaches the lid to the bottle (an essential feature for me). If you look hard enough, you can find the old style out there. They didn't stop making them, they only changed the listing for this product.**

Here's the product I reviewed WITH the loop... Nalgene HDPE Wide Mouth Bottle

This review is for the 32oz version of this bottle.

Simply stated, after having tried many types of water bottles, this Nalgene bottle is superior to them all.

I have had these Nalgene bottles for over 10 years and have taken them all over the world, and not once have any of them leaked or broken. I have also never had to replace the cap and I always carry it by the loop. I use mine everyday as I pack my own lunch and carry my own water.

Due to this bottle being somewhat see-through, it is nice and very handy to be able to see the water level with marked graduations on the side. But the best part for me about this Nalgene bottle is that YOU CAN FREEZE IT! I like to fill it up halfway, to the 16 oz point and then stick it in the freezer at an angle with the lid cracked. Once it's frozen I fill it up the rest of the way with water and have ice cold water for hours. I tried doing this exact method with the Lexan/Tritan version of the Nalgene's (the colored pretty ones) and they cracked after a few months. Because the Lexan/Tritan version is so rigid they can't stand up to repetitive expansion/contraction. This model is firm and holds its shape, but yet is flexible enough to be frozen repetitively without any ill effect.

This review in particular is for the teeny, one ounce size of Nalgene bottle. What makes this so good for the camp kitchen?

* Nalgene bottles are made from non-reactive HPDE (Type 2) plastic that will not impart flavor or odor to your food or leach chemicals into them.

* The caps seal so well on the bottles as to make them virtually leak-proof. This is a big deal when you are backpacking, or even car camping - you don't want your food or liquids spilling out into the rest of your gear.

* These bottles are tough. I've been using some of mine for almost 30 years now, and none have ever failed, broken, or leaked. While light, they are reasonably thick walled and can take a fair amount of abuse.

* In my opinion, these are the best lightweight containers on the market. Who wants to take a partially-filled glass bottle of olive oil for cooking with them in their backpack? Get the right size of container that you want for your cooking liquids: soy sauce, oil, maple syrup, etc. and pack them with confidence. Not so much an issue with car camping, but if you are packing gear in on your back, these light and durable containers are the way to go.

* Versatility - pick the size that's right for your need. When you are done, they can be cleaned and re-used for anything else.

The tiny 1 oz. size works well for me when I want to bring along salt/pepper, garlic powder, or other powdered seasoning. It also works very well as a waterproof container for matches. Larger sizes work well for olive oil, maple syrup, etc. I even use slightly larger sizes, such as the 8 oz. size, for dry goods like rice or pancake mix. Some things lend themselves to small 'zip-lock' baggies, but for anything else, I use these. An additional bonus is that these will last practically forever if you take care of them, reducing the amount of trash produced from packaging.

Highly recommended!

you can't go wrong with nalgene. as a camper for many years.. i just buy these things out of habit. i use them for everything.. water, food, sling shot ammo, bla bla bla. the point being, i know these things are reliable, so i don't even shop around anymore when i need one.. if i lose one, need a present, discover a new need to carry something.. then i just order another to store my stuff.
