I have been looking for a way to keep my hands warm on my DRZ-400S. I have heated grips, but they don't help my fingertips. I bought and tried about five types of winter motorcycle gloves, and they were ok down to about 45F, but not at 28F. My very good Marmot (non motorcycle) gloves with the heated grips and with polyester glove liners added were usable at 28F for up to 30 minutes at highway speeds, but my fingertips were still too cold after 15 minutes. Adding chemical heat packs did not help, and they are not armored.

Electrically-heated glove inserts did work - but when I combine them with my heated-grips, my heated-vest, and my LED driving lights, my bike was depleting the battery as I was driving, and that is unsustainable. I put in a 35 watt HID headlight and a 5 watt LED tail-light to reduce power, but it was still a net loss. I looked for a way to be warmer with less power, and these mitts work. They look as dumb as a dog with one of those cones on its head, but not being cold and being able to wear thinner gloves with more dexterity is worth it. I used trauma shears to cut mirror holes, and cauterized the cutout with a solder iron.

Great for keeping my hands warm. I use them on my Mountain bike and my hands get pretty hot in these with just really thin gloves on. I've ridden to about 6 degree temps and my hands were still VERY toasty. No need for any hot hands or other hand warmers.

The Kolpin mitts worked very well keeping the wind off my hands and keeping my hands warm. The metal ring in the cuffs make it easy to slide your hand in and out of the mitts. You can't see it on the photo, but the windward side of the mitt has extra thick padding which is probably intended to protect your hands from the brush in the woods. But the padding also helps the mitts keep their shape in the wind. I cut a small hole for the mirror stem in each mitt and used them on my Yamaha V-Star 1100 Classic motorcycle. The mitts worked very well. My hands probably would have stayed warm even if I was not wearing gloves. There was no air leakage into the mitts at all.

So I installed these on my Yamaha Super Tenere.
My intended use was to break cold wind at freeway speeds in 30°f or lower conditions.
I must say that they work amazing!!! I tested them at 38°f with no gloves at all at 85mph for approximately 40 mins and was totally fine. That being said I would recommend a light glove.

As for the install I did have to remove the mirrors and stock hand guards for the fit over the bars and controls to be roomy enough the operate all the controls freely.
I did have one concern at freeway speed over 80mph. It seemed the unit was being pushed back into the front brake lever by wind resistance and causing the front brake to be lightly engaged.
I fixed this problem by fabricating a small aluminum guard to keep the cover from being pushed into the brake lever.
I tested the guard to 100mph with good results and no problems.
I know not everyone will have the ability to fabricate a guard but if you do you will be happy with this purchase.
I really can't believe I never had these in the winter before.

I will post pictures of the guard later

After reviewing a few other similar products, ended up ordering these for my motorcycle, 09 Yamaha Vstar 950 Tourer.
Installed them yesterday, in about 20 mins. The only complication is the mirror stems, and that can be handled by adding a couple holes with the help of a knife.

Very happy with the result. Used it first time today, and getting hands in/out is easy, and I can access the brake/clutch/controls with ease. Should keep my hands comfortable in cold Chicago winter.

Added a relatively longer review with many pics of the bike on the vstar 950 forum, here is the link for that: [...]

I know this is originally designed for ATVs, hence the need for additional step to put in holes. If anybody from manufacturer reads these reviews, it would be really nice to have another version of the exact same design, with some easier solution for motorcycle installation. There is a decent sized market out there for that product.

Note: I got them for $25 on amazon, with free prime shipping.

My black Geartector Mitts were mounted on a 2008 Harley touring bike. I was alerted to the issue of wind pressing against break and clutch levers (from reviewers). I noticed this happening to me at speeds above 50MPH. Went to my local cycle store(s) in search of a off-road hand-guards that could be put inside the mitt, but found that nothing really worked (even if I cut it way down). I needed was some way to put a few pounds of resistance to hold the mitts away from the levers. Next, I went to Ace Hardware and bought a .070inch thick aluminum 3/4-inch bar ($6.50). Cut the bar into 8nch lengths, drilled a 5/16 hole in one end, twisted the bar 90degrees (with two crescents), tweaked an arc, and replaced my bike's handlebar mounted mirror hardware (washer) with the bar that I had "fabricated." It worked for me. Holds the levers out and takes virtually no space inside the mitt.

+ months.... Adding to above- I removed the fuzzy liner (big improvement). Be careful, however, look carefully. Take your time - if you decide to do this. Secondly, as an experienced rider - there ARE those times where you need to get to the controls quickly. Be smart. Dont' assume that you are soooo good it wont happen. Practice. What happens if you have to grab controls from outside the mitts. How well practiced are you at inserting your gloved hand - grabbing the bars and brake? Be smart. Do it right and its a good solution.
