I have owned numerous flexible claws and they all had one primary problem - you usually cannot see what you are trying to reach for! Using a flashlight or drop light is not always effective, especially in tight spaces. This model from Mayhew fixes that problem as it puts the light right where you are reaching. Since it is an LED, the light is bright and does not create reflective images or distorting shadows of the object you are trying to get to. Really surprised how well designed this pickup tool is. The coiled springs do not distort when bending like the cheaper ones that I have bought over the years. Finally have one that can spot the small items that fall into a tiny unlit part of my workshop. Even more surprising is that it has a replaceable battery that can be ordered online.

UPDATE 3/15: unfortunately I have to edit my review, as the LED light stopped working after only a few uses of this tool. It's an LED light, it's already INDESTRUCTIBLE, and yet they managed to build this so sloppily that it breaks? Stay away, try a grabber from a better company: MAXCRAFT 60184 3-in-1 Flex Lighted Magnetic/Claw Pick-Up Tool

It's been awhile since I've given a properly deserving product a good review, and it's this product that finally makes me want to. Why? I bought this more or less randomly a couple days ago and I just retrieved a Bic lighter from under my bed with virtually no effort. The claw snatched it easily. Well made. The light is key for peering confidently into the dark crannies.

After it saves you some back and/or knee pain fetching something under the bed or wherever, you'll see how useful this thing really is.

I originally got this for the car but have used it for a lot more than just that. Works very well, good grip. I was able to retrieve a screwdriver that fell into the engine compartment. The light works well and is well protected so I don't see it breaking.

Too many times there is no light down where you drop stuff and this little gem solves that problem. I show this to anyone that comes in my garage and they want one too. I have also used it to look down into cylinders. An ingenious product.

Bought this in March 2009 and used it approx 5x (its only for hard to reach places). I have it always standing by my drawers; two days ago, saw spring came out of the top part (handle) and the bottom claws protruded out and no one has access to my room so there can't possibly be any one tempering with it. Bought this as a gift last year also, but the status is unknown as it is still sealed in packaging...going to re buy this in a few days. If it breaks again (in however long), I'll definitely be updating this as it will be the end of the product line for me.

I decided to buy this pick-up tool as an alternative to the magnetic retrieval device that I recently purchased. i liked the idea of a light at the end of the retriever and the ability to grab non-magnetic items. However, in comparison to the magnetic retriever, the shaft of this device cannot be bent into a permanent shape. While the claw works correctly, the possibility of kinking the shaft is a concern. Still, I plan to keep this item in the tool chest for use on non-magnetic items.
