I started using Alpha-GPC two years ago. Since then, I've used both the Now, Source Naturals and Jarrow formulations to good effect. They're all fine.

Why use them at all? This takes a bit more discussion. Alpha-GPC is supposed to be a more bio available form of choline. Choline helps to support and enhance the brain's levels of acetylcholine. ACh in turn is a key neurotransmitter which affects focus, cognition, and memory as well as those parts of the nervous system responsible for hearing. For this reason, Alpha-GPC may be helpful as a way to enhance memory and focus and counter some mild forms of dementia. I understand that students often use this to prepare for and take exams. I use it myself to facilitate brainwave entrainment while using psychoacoustic meditation soundtracks.

Other supplements may help to heighten the effects of Alpha-GPC. In particular, Huperzine-A is an anti-cholinesterase supplement that tends to maintain ACh levels that would otherwise be degraded through hydrolysis. As a result, Huperzine-A tends to prolong the effects of Alpha-GPC.

For those on a tight budget, simple choline bitartrate is available at a somewhat lower price. It has effects similar to Alpha-GPC although I personally find the action of Alpha-GPC to be somewhat smoother.

Anyone taking these supplements should know that, while they are generally safe, doses at higher levels will tend to lead to anxiety, insomnia, and hyperactivity. The easiest way to mitigate such symptoms is through the use of diphenhydramine (Benadryl), which has anti-cholinergic properties.

I hope this helps.

UPDATE: since I wrote the initial review, I've added vinpocetine as a supplement. This is a vasodillator that improves blood flow in the brain, thereby helping memory functions and also acting as a neuroprotective agent for things like strokes. I've found it to be highly effective, especially when combined with Alpha-GPC and Huperzine-A.

I bought this because it was very highly rated. It probably is a quality product but it did not agree with me at all.

I have to give it two stars because I only took it three times and got a headache each time I took it. The second time, I took half of the powder out of the capsule and threw it away before I took it. The third time I took almost 2/3 of the powder out of the capsule. I had a very distinct and long-lasting headache each time I took it.

I really wanted this to work for me. I asked a friend to take it to see if it caused a headache..yep. Headache for him too. We all respond differently to things, so it might work for you. But as for me? I'm sorry to say that I didn't like it. I should say that this rating is no reflection of the quality of the product or the company who makes it. The Alpha GPC and I just, plain and simple, didn't get along.

Like many others, I bought this to supplement racetams.

When I started taking piracetam, I began experiencing headaches and would become fatigued really easily. For those who don't understand how piracetam works (this is just one of the ways, not THE way), it facilitates turnover of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine, which is involved in memory, attention, arousal, as well as motor function (used for muscle excitation). So if you aren't getting plenty of choline (the precursor from which acetylcholine can be produced) in your diet, then taking racetams can deplete you of acetylcholine. Thus, ensuing fatigue and brain fog.

That's where choline supplements come in. I walk a mile to work everyday in the morning, and when I started taking racetams, my muscles were pretty darn tired after half a mile. And I am a fairly fit individual.

Then I started taking a capsule of this with my doses of piracetam (twice a day). In the morning, this is right before I head out to work.

At the beginning of the walk, while the capsule was being processed in my body, I would still feel quite fatigued. Then, 10 minutes into my walk, I start feeling great! Energetic, uplifted, and ready to go to work. My brain goes from an uphill struggle (I am not a morning person), to feeling "activated" almost.

Don't expect a "high" from this. The effects are distinct and noticeable, but it's not like taking amphetamines where there's an obviously drug-induced euphoria and brain speeding. I just feel much better, but in a natural way. Preferable in my opinion.

Note: this is with Alpha GPC + piracetam. Not Alpha GPC alone.

First off, much thanks to eCognition for your review on these products. You're a huge help to people like myself. Check out his reviews, very solid information. On to the product, as always I trust NOW products. They make high quality products (I have several other supplements by them and they are great). That being said, I am not a fan of alpha-GPC. It is said to be the most bio-available form of choline and it may be, this stuff made me have super anxiety! I am a chilled out kind of guy but I found myself pacing and flying off the handle when taking this. I stacked it with L-Theanine (which is known for its calming effect) but still found myself on edge. I continued to use the product until I finished it (I couldn't waste it!) but when I finally cycled off of it I could really notice the L-Theanine's calming effects which was great. Did the Alpha GPC give me the superior mental acuity that I was looking for? I didn't really notice, but I am a young guy (at the time of this review I am 28 years old) so it may have more benefit as I age (if I take it again). I'd recommend you try it, but keep an eye out for anxiety. It may be from the Alpha GPC.
