Jimmy Rowles, from the outset, possessed the boundless talent and creative energy to evolve into a major jazz solo artist. Whatever the reason, he opted for the path of sideman or accompanist. Early in his career, he elevated this musical vocation to new heights. His tenure with such legends as Lady Day, Peggy Lee, and Ella Fitzgerald enhanced the quality of both their recordings and stage performances. Even in the twilight of his career he was still making major contributions. Case in point, the mentoring of a young Diana Krall and his influence in persuading her to include vocals in her performance rather then strictly instrumental renditions. Another example is his work with Canadian jazz vocalist Jeri Brown, in creating her classic CD "Timeless Place".

Occasionally, Jimmy assumed a more featured role in his recording endeavors. A rare treat for his countless admirers. Two of these classics were "The Duo Sessions" with Ray Brown and "The Peacocks' with Stan Getz, Buster Williams and Elvin Jones. Both CDs are highly recommended. These records contain not only Jimmy's unique keyboard style but his warm and soulful vocals.

The third classic is the all instrumental "Trio `77/'78". This CD contains 13 studio tracks recorded in NYC with a total playing time of 66.25 minutes.

Tracks 1-4 consist of Jimmy's interpretation of Miles Davis' Nonet," Birth of the Cool". He performs a splendid musical deconstruction of "Jeru"," Venus DeMilo", "Godchild" and "Darn That Dream". Jimmy allows plenty of space for both Rufus Reid (bass) and Mickey Roker (drums) to stretch out and demonstrate their musical chops. Mr.Roker's brush strokes on all four tunes are exceptional and flawless.

Tracks 5-7 originate from an April 1978 NYC studio date.
