This wire is exactly what you expect. Many emerging speaker wire products in the past couple years have started to skimp by coloring aluminum or burying aluminum inside an outside ring of copper, or marketing a product with a larger gauge than it actually is. Lately, it has become hard to find a cost effective option for speaker wire that is actually what it says it is. I trust monoprice because they give quality products and they dont try to skimp or cheat you out of what you think you are buying. Monoprice also doesn't overcharge by elating their product to more than it is by advertising. So a comparison of wire that I have bought:

I have bought 50ft of 12 gauge speaker wire from Monster, Pyle, and Monoprice.

Pyle speaker wire is by far the worst. Pyle "12 gauge" wire had maybe 30% less metal than what 12 gauge should be. I also suspect colored aluminum, although I am not sure about that. I also only received about 40 ft. Its amazing how much smaller the Pyle spool is than other spools. $15. I guess you get what you pay for.

Monster speaker wire has great conductivity, and my speakers sound clear with good response in the full range of tones. The gauge is what it says it is and the coating in nice. My two complaints are it is overpriced (I got mine for $40 at BestBuy, but buying at BestBuy might be the issue) and my other small complaint is that one of the two wires has really light white writing on one of the tubing. Sometime it would be useful if it was more noticeable. There is also a small plastic tube on the inside of the wire, which takes away from the gauge of the wire. But overall a good product. I would definitely buy monster wire if it were competitively priced with Monoprice wire.Read more ›

I ordered this product because it was a good price (too good) for pure copper wire. I have been trying to avoid copper clad aluminum (CCA) wire but it has completely invaded the market. Unfortunately, I've been had--This is not pure oxygen free copper (OFC). It appears to be CCA. I've attached a macro photo to show what I mean.

What I can't understand though is why this product page and the product packaging don't state that any aluminum is involved. The spool states, verbatim: "Conduit: High Purity, Oxygen-free Copper". This cannot be true. I cut a sample, stripped off the insulation, and scraped the strands with a knife. Sure enough, just like other CCA wire, the copper scraped off and revealed the silvery metal underneath. Amazon's product page states it is "Greater than 99.95% pure, oxygen-free copper conductors", but it seems more realistic to say that it is 99.95% aluminum and 0.05% copper (a micron-thin copper coating).

I am very upset by this obvious misrepresentation. It is incredibly simple to test for CCA wire versus oxygen free copper. That being the case, why do I see several reviews stating it is pure copper? Why, at the time of this review, does it have 5 stars on Monoprice and 4.5 stars on Amazon. The only complaints I've found is that the insulation is too thick for banana plugs or that the AWG rating is really 14, not 12. Are people not aware of CCA wire or has the product changed since those reviews?

I wont bother returning it. The market is so invaded with CCA and marked inappropriately that I can't be bothered to buy it online anymore. I suggest to anyone who has bought this to perform the scrape test yourself.

I recently bought some 14 AWG 99.99% OF copper speaker wire on ebay for $20. Upon arrival it looked good and I was mostly satisfied. Being the curious cat that I am I soaked a piece of stripped ebay wire in an ammonia based gun cleaner, ammonia is used to chemically strip and remove copper from gun bores. After a few hours of soaking the ebay wire turned silver in color. So I then discovered that the ebay wire was not in fact true copper wire. I then immediately returned the ebay wire and bought this Monoprice wire. Upon arrival the Monoprice wire looked to be of very high quality. Although others have said that it comes with a very thick jacket I thought it was perfect. Of course I also did the ammonia test with the Monoprice wire. The results proved that the Monoprice wire is in fact real copper wire. If you are looking for high quality true copper speaker wire at a reasonable price this is it.

I noticed another review that said this wire is CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum).

I have a cousin that is a Metallurgist and asked her to run a test on the copper in this product. She came back with a 99.85% pure copper. Under their standards this is considered 100% OFC (Oxygen Free Copper). I was also concerned about it being 12AWG; they measured it at 12.29AWG just a little smaller than 12AWG but close enough to call it 12AWG. I have one run over 50 feet and had no signal loss.

The room I use as my Media Center is 24'X36' with 16 foot vaulted ceilings. This wire has really improved my sound over my old 14AWG wire. Highly Recommend.
