I don't remember using gesso since I was in art school over 40 years ago (because I mostly use watercolors and when I paint in oils or acrylics I use pre-primed canvases). Liquitex has been my go-to brand of acrylic paint since I was in high school and I've never been disappointed in the quality of Liquitex products.
What prompts me to write a review for Liquitex Gesso is how impressed and actually amazed I am at how far just a little bit of this gesso goes. I decided to buy gesso so I could finally paint over some dark canvases that I painted years ago when I was in a Rothko-esque phase. Because it's been so long since I last used gesso I had no idea how much I'd need. (I take it for granted that considerably more gesso is required for gessoing raw canvas.) I considered buying a 32 ounce container of a budget brand that Amazon sells, but based on my excellent experience with Liquitex products over the decades I decided to pay more for a better quality product and to start with a 16 ounce container and see how far that would go. And I am glad I did.
I poured less than 4 ounces of this gesso into a jar and applied it with a brush that I dipped in water a few times as I painted gesso over 5 dark paintings. One is 24" x 36" and the other four are 18" x 24". I did not expect that a single coat of gesso would suffice to opaquely cover the dark canvases, and they did need two coats (sanded in between coats). But I'm impressed that such a small amount of this gesso - less than 4 ounces - could go so far. Wetting the brush made the gesso a bit more workable. At their site, Liquitex says their gesso can be thinned with up to 25% water.Read more ›
