After the demise of my much beloved "Premier" magazine, I sought out a replacement with grim hope. There just aren't many choices in quality entertainment/film mags out there for someone wanting to keep up with the film/media world and that doesn't reside in LA/Hollywood. I settled on EW but didn't have high hopes or expectations that it would ever be able to duplicate the thrill I got when receiving the new issue in the mail like Premier did. 2 years later, I am a convert! Sure, it's not the glossy, high quality production of its predecessor but I've grown to overlook that because of the great content it provides me with each and every week. I know what's coming not only in film, but on TV and even in the literary world! Great reviews on everything from music to books to cable really filled the void Premier left behind. The witty writing and sometimes snarky commentary is right up my alley. To discover that Stephen King is one of their rotating writers, along with the amazing Diablo Cody is worth the price of subscription alone! This is one magazine that gets read & re-read, cover to cover, and referred back to till it's almost in tatters. Without it, I'd be aimlessly adrift among the mind-boggling sea of entertaiment options. If you're looking for a magazine that's not only about today's media/entertainment industry but is also entertaining, I highly recommend EW!

I was a EW subscriber for years. First they changed the look and tone and went glossy. No big. Then they started the rampant spoilerism, starting with the Ausiello Files, and last year (I think) an article defending spoilerism from one of their staff reviewers. Then they went from occasional snark to all-out political potshotting. If I wanted a little politics mixed into a glossy entertainment magazine, I'd read Time. Now they've turned into a shill for Apple.

All I wanted was one source to find out about upcoming movies, TV, books, etc. Now EW is continually ruining the stories, breaking the fourth wall with their political commentary, and trying to sell me crap at no end. With regret I just let my subscription lapse. There is nothing left to read in any given issue.

EW is a breath of fresh air when it comes to entertainment magazines. It has a witty intelligent humor and it does not ever mention gossip of the moment like people, us weekly, etc. If you enjoy reading articles on upcoming movies, tv shows, music, and books (especially those that are not mass marketed on tv), this mag is for you! They often offer articles of what is trendy at the moment, but it is the non-obvious trendy items you wouldn't expect. This week included the new show "Michael and Michael" on Comedy Central and new book "This is Where I Leave You". I actually read it cover to cover each week. It is a very nice present to receive each week (and at an AMAZING price!!)
