Excellent bit. It cuts much better if you take the self feed screw out and replace it with a short 5/16 high speed steel drill bit. It cuts much smoother and you can do it by hand without it ripping out of your hands. I used it with a cordless makita hand drill, a 1/2" milwaukee mag drill and on a large drill press. All of which drilled perfectly with this bit. I was boring 2-1/2" into 4" fence posts; both juniper and pressure treated. I have not used it on any hard woods yet; however, thus far I am very happy with it.

Mine was cheap. Extremely sharp at first. Seems like it dulled faster then it should have. Would be nice if it had the replaceable parts (feed tip and blades) like the Milwaukee version. Buy that one instead.

Best self feed bit I've ever used. I use it to drill through 2x16 joists and it is amazingly fast. As other reviewers have stated do not use this with a drill that doesn't have a clutch. I use it with the Dewalt version of the 'hole-hawg' which is DW124K. That monster has enough mass and grip to allow me to hold it steady while drilling. The only time it has hurt me was drilling through a small piece of 2x4 which slipped and hit my leg (to prevent this first screw the smaller boards to larger pieces that will hold the small piece still while you drill). Never had a problem on joists which is what this is made for. I'm fairly certain I've even drilled though screws and nails and mine still keeps going.

I drilled through eight treated 6x4 posts so I could pass a piece of pipe. My only complaint is that the drill was too aggressive (as others have noted) and couldn't clear the chips fast enough. I was using a large drill press/end mill on its lowest speed. I found I had to drill about 3/8" at a time then clear the chips by raising the bit out of the hole. Otherwise it would bind up. The wood was pretty wet and the chips were big and thick. I doubt this would be a problem with dryer wood.

I can't imagine this size bit would work well with a hand drill unless you were very steady.

This bit is as ferocious as it looks. Endearingly named "the shredder", this bit will certainly tear through whatever hard surface is in front of you. As it turns out, this was a little too much bit for my blood, or my drill. I use a DeWalt 20v cordless drill and it was unable to keep up with the bit. The feed may have been to quick. It kept binding up and converting the circular motion to my drill which brought my hand, wrist and forearm with it, ending in a brief but startling collision with my face. Great bit, but if you are going through any thick piece of substantially dense wood, I would recommend having a more powerful drill to accompany this beast.

It really requires a low speed, high torque, high amp drill. The self feed screw grabs and pulls the bit in too quick, at least for my drills. I burned up dads old strong drill. I have bought 4 different drills trying to find one that will not bind up in the first 1/4 inch of cutting. While this is maybe not a design flaw, it is something that should be clearly mentioned as this bit requires a strong motor... perhaps more cutting blades or design the screw threading to pull it in slower, but it is what they sell.. I have not been able to use it as i intended.

it eats true 9 by 2 timbers.ive never saw a bit to drill so fast true timber.compares to run of the mill core bits i was useing,..with these bits ide have 10 holes drills,and with core bits,ide have being luck to have 1 to 2 holes drills.plus ide need a 2nd man with me keep the pressure on the right angle while i be drlling,with these bits.i dont need a 2nd man with me to drill holes as it pulls itself in to the timber,great piece of kit.they pays for them selfs in the 1st job.and saves me big time
