These sets allow kids to create lovely designs and then color them. Reminds me of spirographs I used as a child, but easier to use. Simple and sturdy...would make great gifts for several ages (preK-3?), and some sets would have appeal to either girls or boys.

Each set comes with 10 sheets of square paper, but I bought a ream of A4 (special size) paper and trimmed one edge myself to include a larger supply of 50 sheets for each child. These easily fit a gallon-size zipper bag.

Search "A4 paper" ... I purchased Hammermill Fore MP Copy/Laser/Inkjet Paper, 96 Brightness, 20lb, A4 Size 210mm x 297mm (8-3/10" x 11-7/10"), 500 Sheets (10303-6) here on amazon.

All of my kids, from my three-year-old to my eight-year-old, love this toy, though the older two enjoy it much more than their younger sister (of course). My girls love to draw, but they're able to make really cool designs with the mandala and this toy keeps them occupied for long stretches of time.

I love the 2-in-1 designers! I use the small one to make cards all the time. Sometimes I color them and sometimes I leave them for the recipient to color. I recommend using a small piece of tape to hold your smaller papers in place while working though.

My 7 year old received this as a Christmas present last year, and has used it a few times. But she doesn't love it. It is a little difficult for her to turn the center circles in precise increments to make a symmetrical design, and she gets discouraged. She likes to color the designs we make together, but prefers doing spin art over doing this. Maybe she'll like it yet, but so far it hasn't been the best gift.

I bought this trusting the Ravensburger name. I have others of their products and they've earned my trust. On opening the package, I thought, "This is a cleverly-constructed tool." On trying to use it, I think less of it. The arrows that line up iterations of the design elements are difficult to see, and they do not have "stops" incorporated in them, so the iterations are "off" a bit as one goes around ... not very desirable for this sort of construction.

The first stencil choice I made was disappointing --- I chose the double leaf shape, and there was no choice of number of arrows between iterations that came out even around the circle! (I used up several pieces of paper proving this.) There was also no choice of number of arrows that resulted in a neat overlap; and the only way I finally got a ring of leaves was to use my protractor and divide the circle into 6ths, putting one pair in each segment. The arrows divide the circle into 16 segments. Why put a design element on the stencil that doesn't fit into 16ths, 8ths or 4ths? Once I got the ring of leaves, though, I was hard pressed to find any other element on the stencil that I could connect to it radially. I did finally use the dented arc at the outer end, and the "stamen" part of the "flower" shape on the inner end, but it still looked half-baked.

Then I tried using the "flower" shape. This shape only fit at a 4-arrow shift. Trying for more "fill" of the circle, I attempted a 2-arrow shift, but the shape does not overlap evenly. I did just manage to get a 3-arrow shift version, but the overlaps were not clean.Read more ›
