As a publisher of Vienna’s elite composers, Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754-1812) became close friends with many of the big names of the era. Mozart dedicated one of his most famous string quartets to him, and Beethoven sent him a letter, addressed to my “most beloved brother”. He also wrote a little music. One of the most popular composers during his lifetime, his work is barely remembered today. Over 50 symphonies, much chamber music for strings, at least 8 operas and more than 25 concertos exist among his list of compositions. The three pieces on this recording comprise his entire output for the solo viola.

Paired oboes and horns supplement the strings in the orchestral opening to the B Flat Concerto, a genial ‘Allegro con spirito’. Amid the swirling double stops and deft fingerwork, the violist uses a restrained vibrato to great effect, most noticeable in the eloquent final cadenza. A relaxed ‘Poco adagio’ follows, with the measured tempo allowing an unhurried exploration of the rich tonal qualities of the lower register. The easy vibrato enhances the leisurely pace and tranquil tone. With playful exchanges between the soloist and the symphonic support, a jolly ‘Rondo’ close the work. After beginning in duple meter, the 3rd movement shifts into a dancing triple meter for the coda, a surprising signature change initiated by the frisky viola.

Probably written in the 1780’s, the concerto in D Major may be Hoffmeister’s best known work. A sunny ’Allegro’ finds the solo string spending more time in the instrument’s higher register with a distinctly livelier attack and elastic phrasing in the cadenza. In D Minor, the mournful ‘Adagio’ features a sweeping orchestral intro that sets the stage for the despondent viola.
