This is a simple voltage averaging meter. Perfect for sticking in a small kit or in a vehicle. I carry mine in a messenger bag and use for AV diagnotics in PA equipment. This simple meter in class III 300V & Class II 600V rated for AC and DC installations. It's not suitable for large DB boards and heavy switch gear but for end user equipment or automotive daignostics this is a great tool to have on hand. It's capable of AC and DC voltage measurement to 600V. It has a bar graph on the bottom of the screen which is a rarity on cheaper meters and a terrific diagnostic tool. In addition this meter has a continuity tester, a resistance measurement feild, and a 3V diode check. It's a 4000 count auto ranging meter with selectable manual range override.

Included in the kit is a detailed user manual and a nice folding "wallet case". The one complaint I have is the perminantly affixed test leads. These are small and flexible and well suited for general use applications. But they also the Achilles heal of the meter as when (not if) they become damaged, they cannot be replaced. That said, if you catch this on sale, it's cheap enough to replace assuming you get a few good years of service out of it. Amprobe is a division of Fluke. I've found most of their products to be quality built and this model is no exception. Granted it has some limitations, but I'm reminded of the saying, the perfect tool is the one you have on hand when you need it.

Note: The DM78C is the credit card size meter. The DM73C is the pen model. I have the 78C so my review pertains to that model. After two years it's still going. Though admittedly it sees light usage. However I have noticed two issues.Read more ›

This is quite possibly the smallest multimeter I have seen. It is a handy size and the right price to be a functional piece of a handy toolkit such as a motorcyclist requires when space and weight are a consideration. There is no loss of functionality though despite its diminuitive size. Simple and functional. Just what is needed.

Very good quality. My only complaint is that the contact area on the tip is only about 1/16" long - Good to prevent shorts with other components, but you have to have the tip on the contact, not the side of the pin. I had a $15 similar unit; i can not say that this is significantly better in function; Quality absolutely. Did not come with a case, i used the case from my $15 Craftsman unit. If the $$ is a consideration, then perhaps the $15 unit is a better value.

I'm an electrician and I was looking for a small multi-meter to keep in my tool bags. While this meter works fine, I don't care for some aspects. First it defaults to DC voltage and you have to change to AC after each time you turn it on. It does not have any sound or vibration when voltage is detected, just a beep when checking continuity. And probably the most frustrating aspect, the probe tips are so small its hard to keep them in contact with most household wiring. While the unit seems to work fine, it did noting to make my job any easier and I found it so frustrating that I don't use it much. Now the pros, for someone working on DC voltage or smaller applications where you need a small probe tip for precise placement, this unit will work just fine. For me, ill just keep looking for one that meets my needs.

I owned several "pocket" multimeters over the years but was disappointed when the actual size was too large for my shirt pocket. The are cheaper, smaller ones available but Amprobe is a reliable brand and I placed reliability and accuracy above price. Detailed specs aree available on their website and this meter is rated for 600Vac/dc. There is only one feature I wish it had and that is a backlight! All in all an excellent product.

For the modern motorcyclist the VOM or multimeter has become almost the most important thing in your tiny tool kit. This one is very robust and straight forward to use. It is bigger and thicker than a credit card more like an audio cassette with case and manual, especially when in its protective case. The only flaw I have found is that the ON/OFF mode switch does not have firm detents. It could,although never has, easily be turned on accidentally but I think it cuts it's self off after a while anyway. I secure mine with a bit of duct tape. The leads are a bit short but that is necessary to be compact.
The multi-language users manual almost doubles the size of the complete package.The manual can be taken apart, unused languages removed and re stapled to be much more compact.You could also download the manual and keep it in your phone @ [...]
A thick rubber band or velcro strap, stored around the cover will allow you to attach it firmly whilst using both hands to make the contacts with the probes.
Don't have a clue how to use a VOM for motorcycle repairs but would like to learn? Amazon sells a great manual: Motorcycle Electrical Systems: Troubleshooting and Repair
Don't have time and don't care to learn so much? Just buy an audible continuity tester.
