Usually I'm not fond of the healthier varieties of pasta, but thought I'd give this one a try. Though it still has a slight grittiness to the texture (though much less than some other "healthy" varieties), it has a good deal of robust flavor, and can stand alone as a meal with a salad, or a make a very nice side dish.

The box is slightly deceptive in that it gives the Protein/ALA Omega-3/Fiber breakdown for a 100g serving, but recommends a serving size of 56g (which is an excellent portion for a side dish). Nevertheless, it does have some great stuff in it (like legumes and flax seed) and though it might not taste like the pasta you had on your Roman holiday, it's still very good.

The recipe on the box, "Barilla Plus penne with spring vegetables" sounds delicious, and I might try it minus the tomatoes next time. My diet is so limited, and does not allow regular pasta, but I can have feta cheese and olive oil, which is how I tried this pasta, on a bed of arugula, and it was a fine meal.
Update! I just made my recipe for minestrone and added these Barilla Plus penne on low heat with some fresh shelled peas for the last 15 minutes...Oh! What a soup. Superb!

I have no idea if this is "better for you" than regular pasta. Sure, it's got good things added to it, and Barilla claims it's a step up, but how can you get "better" than just one ingredient? Even better if it's a whole grain ingredient, versus a processed one. I think I'll stick with my belief that simple whole grain pastas are the closest you can get to healthy in a box, but this probably isn't too far behind.

My wife didn't know it wasn't normal pasta, even when I mentioned it; it doesn't taste weird or different. This is a decent, fairly thick penne pasta that cooks well and doesn't get mushy like some cheaper brands of pasta. Barilla does a decent job of making it, like they do with all of their pastas. Pasta cannot be made bad in Italy (it's against their religion or something: the Pope set standards for pasta in the 13th century!). But this pasta isn't made in Italy, despite the Italian company and name. As of a few years ago, all of the Barilla sold in the US is made here. In Iowa. Barilla swears on their web site that it's made to their high Italian standards though, so I guess that's good enough for me. Local production is good if it's actually good Italian-quality stuff.

And this was good. So it just might be.

On here at the moment, it's over two bucks a box. You can get it for half that price when on sale at your local supermarket, so be aware that you're paying a bit for the convenience of delivery.

Our family of four enjoyed Barilla Penne Plus with homemade sauce.

* My fiance isn't fussy and seemed to like it.
* His kid, a teenager, IS fussy, and said that it was good.
* My mom, an older diabetic who's very careful, is a big fan of Barilla
and liked the taste.
* I thought it was as good as any other Barilla, with a good texture.
As a vegetarian, I was happy with the extra protein.

The next morning, my mom performed her daily check of her blood sugar and, unlike with other pastas, it was nicely under 100. She, and I, were happy and impressed.

This was a tasty pasta, and it didn't make my mom sick. I'd totally buy it again.

We really enjoy this Pasta. It makes a robust, flavorful dish-we combines it with vegetables, chicken breast, parmesan cheese, capers, & kalamata olives-and Voila! Quick, healthy, wonderful dinner!

Get your flaxseed, legumes, protein and Omega 3's in this very healthy and hearty Pasta.

Expect to boil it a little longer for it has a high protein content. Takes about 10-11 minutes (not bad).

This is a much better alternative than other "healthy" pastas-the texture is not dense or gritty & it is more flavorful. Give it try! It's that good!

I've enjoyed Pasta Barilla ever since I was a kid in Italy. Barilla consistently makes excellent pasta. Now that I'm older, and need to watch my waist line more carefully, I've been using the "Plus" brand, and found that it's almost as good as the regular pasta. The only gripe I have is that "Al Dente" means it's slightly softer than what I'm accustomed to, as it seems to always go a little bit over what I prefer. Undercooking it seems to cause the reverse effect, and instead, it stays undercooked... A small sacrifice for one's health I suppose...

I'm not the kind of person who can rave about packaged pasta. it just isn't in me. To my mind, the pasta is usually just a vehicle for whatever topping we're going to put on it! That said, however, Barilla has become our most common choice over the last few years. Why? A couple of reasons, really. Price-wise, this is usually one of the more economical choices. The pasta is reliable and tasty, the variety is impressive, there is a whole grain option, and there is even a new PLUS line for those looking to increase their protein intake.

Recently, I received a whole slew of Barilla to try out. Some of these are regulars on my table (like the Whole Grain) and some were first time uses. Again, though, Barilla is a brand I swear by and use almost every week. I just find it hard to gush about food products.

Whole Grain Spaghetti (4 1/2 stars): We frequently opt for the whole grain option, I suppose it seems like the healthier alternative. As we've gotten older, we've consciously tried to up our fiber intake and this does so in a pleasant way. Made with 51% whole wheat, we also think these are tastier than traditional pasta. Typical spaghetti preparation.

Whole Grain Thin Spaghetti (5 stars): A thinner choice, this gives you the benefits of the whole grains and fiber but mixes better with sauces.

Mezze Penne (4 stars): We eat a surprising amount of Penne and this Mezze is slightly thinner in cylindrical format. Cooks up and maintains its shape well. We often do baked dishes where we cook the pasta first, then bake it. Even double prepared, they hold their shape well and taste good. Better integrity under these circumstances than the wider penne.

Linguine Fini (4 1/2 stars): These delineations amuse me.
