I do not normally write in caps, but heed my warning: DO NOT MIX THIS WITH PIGMENTS IF YOU WANT IT TO CRACKLE!!! If you mix this with more than a 1 (pigment)-to-8 (crackle paste) it will NOT crackle the way it does in the photos at all. You may get some crackling, but it will mostly just be a ruined paint film. If you must mix pigments with it, use a drop or two of liquid acrylic.

If you DO NOT want it to crackle, mix it with a ton of pigment and paint. It will take on the appearance of Modeling Paste instead, though it's an expensive alternative and you're better off actually buying modeling paste...

All that being said, I love crackle paste! Lay it down first, let it crackle and dry. Add paint for GORGEOUS results. You can make beautiful mosaics, stained glass patterns, and really anything you could imagine. I only recommend using Airbrush acrylics or Liquid acrylics on crackle paste, as heavy body will cover up the crackling and cause you to lose that beautiful mosaic quality.

After you finish your work of art, be sure to SEAL it with an isolation coat (2 parts gel medium to 1 part water - gloss, matte, or satin depends on your preference and how/if you plan on varnishing it). This will create a solid paint film and none of the pieces will fall off and it will last for years to come.

This crackle paste works beautifully when applied in a thin layer with a palette knife. As it dries the crackles appear. And the thinner it is applied, the more crackle appears. I dilute my paint by at least 50% with water, otherwise you will cover up the crackle. When painting with this diluted mixture, the paint seeps down into the cracks and creates a nice effect. The paste needs to be applied to an inflexible support, otherwise the crackle paste could "pop off" the canvas. Golden is a trusted brand for professional artists everywhere.

When I opened the bottle, the medium inside was very pasty in texture and looked very grainy. I don't know if that's how it usually looks since this is my first trial with this medium. I was excited to try it on my painted polymer clay creations because the crackle would make for just the right finish. I read that if you want more cracks then paint it on thicker. I applied a layer of the gel medium over the painted item, not very heavy. In the two items I brushed this on, none crackled. I even waited a couple of days in case it was not dry. The final effect only looked like some kind of gel which was slightly translucent white was brushed on it and that's how it dried. No crackles. No cracks. I will try it again in case this is a fluke and update my review. But so far with the first test, it did not work at all.
